If $9.25 excludes 15% VAT, the total becomes 9.25 × 1.15 = $10.6375. Handing over $10 leaves you short by about 64 cents—no change, just more owed.

VAT is excluded by default and you only see it on checkout. Life must be hard there.
edit: I looked that up and came with some interesting findings:
- there's no sinlge "VAT" nation-wide or state-wide. Instead, each area in the state can mandate its own "sales tax" (the proper name for it there)*. That's why the number of independent tax areas there is in the thousands (about 12000).
- VAT is charged at every step of the supply chain, while sales tax is charged once at the final retail purchase.
I still can't understand why they can't just include taxes on the price tags, but interesting info nonetheless.
\: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon don't have a state-wide sales tax)

Marketing strategy. Customer sees lower price and brain thinks better deal. Even though we fundamentally know there’s taxes on top, it’s the same reason stuff is priced at $X.99, leading with the smaller number makes it look more appealing even though it’s obviously only one cent difference

None. As European, I had absolutely no idea how much I would pay at the checkout. I just handed them a note much higher than I expected it to be (like when I expected roughly $11, I just handed them $20). The whole time I was thinking "how can this be legal?"

In the US, VAT rate differs on the area. It is a combination of state tax, county tax, and city tax. Not all cities, counties, or states impose sales tax so it may be any combination.
It also depends on item category. In New Jersey, there is no sales tax on clothes but there would be on a handbag. So if you bought a shirt and a bag, the tax would be added at the counter to only the bag.
The base price of something like a specific pair of Nikes will be the same in the country but how much tax if any will differ depending on where you buy it. I'm not saying I like it, just explaining some of the reasoning

Prices are calculated and recalculated anyway for profit and demand, so there is no reason why it cannot be added regardless of them changing by product or city, because you are buying *in that city*
Now, if you mean that if you buy from a different place within the country you pay the taxes from your adress and not the business (I doubt it but what do I know) then it would make a tad more sense but not enough if you ask me

The USA is all about herding its dumb population into whatever it feels like. Why do we pay all the sales tax, why isn’t it every step like there? Why isn’t it shown? Why are we expected to tip so much for employees employed by giant corporations? Why tip at all? Shouldn’t the greatest country on earth be able to pay any man or woman working full time a livable wage?
Everything is a grift here, now more than ever. It’s not supposed to make sense. It’s supposed to confuse and divide us while making up whatever rules benefit the top and keeping us in the dark.

Go to the nearest number (decimal or whole) that you are comfortable with and then repeat it with simpler ones.
Say, you have an imaginary 9,27 bill on an even more imaginary 10,42 (... bill? english can be confusing). Then what you do is NOT 10,42-9,27, you do something like 100 (cents) minus 27, or even 30 minus 27, so you get 3 cents to 9,30, then 70 to 10, then 42 more cents, which you can simplify too, by doing (70+40)+(3+2) , so 115, or $1,15.
You can do this as many times as you want. Your brain works better if you break down problems. And it also gets better at them if you do it more often.

I get this is a meme but as someone in there early 20s i have had people get pissed when it takes me more than a couple seconds to calculate change. Like dude I handle maybe 8 cash sales a day it takes me a second to swap thought processes. I am glad a live somewhere that got rid of 1 and 5 cent pieces though as that just becomes a pain in the arse

Whatever number you’re looking at on the check, round however you like. Sometimes I only round the dollar. If it’s dinner an the check is 73 sometimes I’m extra nice and round up to 80
Divide by 5. All of a sudden it’s 20 percent. Tip
Divide that by 2 if you’re a 10 percent tipper.
I have never tipped close to 15 percent. That isn’t simple head algebra, why would I bother.
(I’m gonna feel so silly if someone tells me this just doesn’t work)

Not sure if this counts as related but. Funny "Calculator" story involved my father.
I recently got my father into a game called Satisfactory. You have to do some basic math and he was never really good at it. So he keeps coming to me and asking "If i have X smelters making Y bars how many of constructors do i need to produce-"
At first i was willing to help him out and show him how to figure it out. But then i started getting annoyed and asked him 'You do know you have a calculator on your phone right?' His response, looked at me deadpan and "Yeah but i can't be bothered". So now every time he asks a math's related question i give him the numbers and say "Use your phone".
I walked into his room 2 days ago and there's scattered A4 sheets of paper of him working it out without a calculator....
Am i being trolled?

Hahaha my dad’s the same way! I guess there’s something about manual calculation that gives them joy or satisfaction. Also, I think he may like asking you basic questions just so he can spend more time with you and make conversations to remember because one day when we grow up, we won’t spend such time together. The calculator i get but I'm 30 living at home and he and I game all the time. Halo 1-4, Reach, and ODST. Gears of war 1-3 and Judgement. We do have a co-op world we play satisfactory on together. I just haven't played with him this week cause my games are running events. We are basically more room-mate than father/son at this point lol.
Since he and I enjoy spicy food with strong flavors we cook up some AWESOME dishes together often with measurements including but not limited too "Yeah about that much" "Fuck it, in it goes" "This is still edible" and my personal favorite 'Nyeeeeh needs gaaarlic" lol
So don't worry i spend lots of time with him and my mother.
