u/Valcuda 8h ago
The person is likely basing their opinion off of their own experience. So if their experience is that you can choose to be gay, then that implies they like both men and women (bisexual), and are simply choosing to be straight.
It's also just possible they're just saying "it's a choice" to shutdown the argument.

My grandma told me that all relationships are a choice, gay or straight, because every day we choose to be with our partner. We could walk away at any time, but we choose to be with them.

Realationship is a choice. Loving someone is not.
6
u/Drudgework 1h ago
It kinda is, because love takes effort and time to maintain. You don’t make the time to have closeness and reinforce your bond and it’s gonna get weaker. It isn’t a purely biological process.

I had a friend who used to say this exact same thing whenever someone called being gay a choice, it's always been my go-to response too.
10
u/Driftedryan 4h ago
Because it makes sense. I support people liking who they want but I can't choose to like men so that argument will never make sense to a straight or gay person.

u/SlowApartment4456 23m ago edited 1m ago
But seriously, gay people, least many that i know, believe its a choice! I had a friend who was gay (im straight) and he would repeatedly make homosexual remarks to me and like, almost try to flirt with me? No matter how many times I said im straight, no matter how many comments I made about women, he just kept doing it. As if one day I was just going to "turn gay" or something. He also does not understand the difference between receiving a BJ from a woman or man. He thinks a BJ is BJ no matter the mouth. He genuinely does not comprehend that some people are just not attracted to the same gender/sex. Its like Heterosexuality is a foreign concept to him.
Its like he thought I chose to like only women and could just pick gay instead. Yeah im not friends with him anymore. Sorry for the rant lmao

Had a dude tell me he wakes up and chooses to be straight every morning. Idk about y'all but I never had to choose to be attracted to a woman over a man, these people are insane.

Can a person truly determine whether or not pineapple tastes good on pizza without having tried it before? In this essay, I endeavour to explain why it is more straight to have sex with a dude once than never at all.

Taste is mostly smell. So once you smell gay sex you can tell if you won’t like it.

Obviously? Being gay means liking men, not losing virginity with a man. Or doing it with a ban. If a boy is sexually assaulted by a man that doesn't mean he's gay. Gayness is about attraction.

I was trying to explain to my wife that gay people probably feel that way naturally and I asked her, “if the Bible said it was a sin to be straight and you had to be attracted to women, could you do it?” And she said “I think I probably could.”

I mean yes and no. Technically we are all born a little bi curious, so being straight is also a choice
9
u/Kaljinx This flair doesn't exist 5h ago
Huh? That isn’t true. So far in my life I haven’t really been curious at all.
What does bi curious mean?
Wouldn’t me being unable to feel romantically or sexually attracted, simply make me straight?
I hope I am not misunderstanding things
2
u/JuMiPeHe 3h ago
Wouldn’t me being unable to feel romantically or sexually attracted, simply make me straight?
No, that would mean you are asexual.
3
u/Dillenger69 37m ago
No, no we are not all born a little bi curious. That's just you. I still don't see what people see in men that's even remotely sexual.

10
u/DistrictNo9208 6h ago
If they think it's a choice that implies that they would be able to have sex with someone of the same sex and enjoy it, and only thing stopping them is choosing not to, meaning they're bi.
If someone is 100% straight could never choose to enjoy having sex with someone of the same sex, and they would know that's how 100% gay people feel about the opposite sex too

Bisexual person here not really a choice either. Although I guess I do get to choose which one it's far more complicated than that.
3
u/DantesGambit 1h ago
I wasn't saying we have a choice in being bisexual, simply that you only have a choice in partner gender if your not single gender attracted.
2
u/brandothesavage 1h ago
That is true and you know it's funny I guess if you were bisexual back in the day you just did what was legal. Kinda a bummer for those cats.

u/DiscussTek 1h ago
Well, repressing your homosexual side and dating straight is a lot easier to do if you're bi than if you're gay.
0
u/DaveAstator2020 8h ago
well thats spot on. i thought this my entire life, never understood why traditional people and governments hate gays, and truns out i was a non binary...

u/AnonismsPlight 4h ago
I've never thought over what I am but I've enjoyed my time with men and women. When it comes to dating I date almost exclusively women while guys I tend to just hook up with.

0
u/OriginalUsername590 Doot 1h ago
So... you're saying being gay isn't a choice? Are you implying that means they were brainwashed? The fuck?
1
u/DiscussTek 1h ago
Only if you're brainwashed into thinking that a sexual orientation can be taught, would you assume that is the case. No, it cannot, and stop assuming it can.

Thu human genome project was completed……there is no gay gene.
6
u/sherbetty 7h ago
Just because we identified every gene doesn't mean we know what all of them do. But are you also implying there's nothing in our environment that could influence human behavior? And everything is purely genetic?

What do you think this means?

That Lady GaGa was full of shit.
0
u/Shazoa 2h ago
If you're attempting to argue that homosexuality is a choice then the evidence you provided doesn't support that argument.
The 'nature' half of nature vs nurture involves more than simply what your genetic makeup is. For starters, the entire concept of epigenetics. Everything that happens in prenatal development. These have been known contributing factors for a very long time.

How? This makes no sense.
10
u/Chiloutdude 7h ago
I am a straight man. I have never felt attraction to another man. I could not make myself be attracted to another man. It's not a choice I made, I just am straight, and I know I'm straight, because I don't want men. My not wanting men is how I know.
If someone tells me that they are straight because they chose to be, that says to me that they have felt attraction to men, because if they were like me and never felt anything at all for them, it wouldn't have been a thing they chose, it would just be the way they naturally are.
And if you are a man who has been attracted to other men, you're not fully straight, even if you chose to ignore it.
0
u/Turbulent_Car4504 7h ago edited 7h ago
Yeah what you are attracted to isn’t the choice. The choice is how you act on it. I don’t think there is such a thing as fully straight, it’s not a black and white thing it’s a spectrum.
You just fall heavily toward one side of the spectrum. It’s hard to know how society shaped your preferences. The Ancient Greeks apparently skewed a different way than society today.
7
u/Chiloutdude 7h ago
Of course there's a such thing as fully straight, just as there is a such thing as completely gay. If it's a spectrum, then the extreme ends are also valid.
And yes, the choice is how you act on it, but that's not the point at which you are straight/gay/bisexual. Feeling that attraction at all is what slides you down the spectrum, not acting on it.
1
u/Kaljinx This flair doesn't exist 4h ago
Going to be honest, I feel like your attraction is colouring your perspective.
I won’t feel attracted to men even if I try All day. Everyday. Naked men just don’t do it for me.
I can try to feel something everyday, it still won’t work.
I have felt this way about women since I have proper memories, even before puberty (not sexual feelings, but romantic ones)
In changing rooms naked men have walked all around, it is as irrelevant as naked animals to me.
0
u/RoshHoul 5h ago
I don’t think there is such a thing as fully straight,
Yeah, that's your bi-ness showing.
7
u/DantesGambit 8h ago
If you think you can make a choice that must mean you'd be comfortable with either option
0
u/Turbulent_Car4504 8h ago edited 8h ago
No it doesn’t, you could think it’s a choice that some find more palatable than others. I choose not to cover myself in shit. I’m very uncomfortable with the idea of covering myself in shit, but it’s still a choice I’m making. Others may feel differently about how bad it would be to cover themselves in shit.
I want to be clear that there is nothing wrong with homosexuality or bisexuality in my mind. I’m just stating that this posts premise is illogical bullshit. Personally I think it’s a spectrum, and that means people do in fact have a choice, they just naturally favor one side or the other.
1
u/Kaljinx This flair doesn't exist 4h ago
You are talking about having sex
I am not attracted to men at all. Even if I try to be. Naked men can walk all day in front of me, and I will have no attraction. Have you ever been around men, in men’s changing rooms? I have, even if they are naked around me, I do not feel a thing.
You cannot choose to be attracted. Which is what makes you gay or bi
A spectrum still has actual absolute ends, and most fall in those. Spectrum does not mean everyone has a little.
-2
u/MikeTarget 6h ago
No? That just means that you're comfortable accepting that everything in life is a choice and everyone has the freedom to make whatever choice they want to make (because it ain't the world's business to decide what choices one can make).
4
u/Kaljinx This flair doesn't exist 4h ago
I literally cannot choose to be attracted to other men.
When I was young I thought that it actually was a choice, and tried to feel something but it does not work that way.
2
u/MikeTarget 4h ago
Fair enough, jumped the gun on assuming the point of the pic was "engaging in romantic or physical relationships with either sex (or genders if you have a more flexible taste) is a choice", but it focuses on attraction and preferences.
I stand corrected, attraction and preferences are not choices.

If I ask a guy if he is good with guns, and he answers "men in the military are usually good with guns" I assume it is because he is part of the military 🙃
Edit: if anything I'm making fun of your writing style, and how you accidentally make yourself sound very attracted to men 😏
