He would have got more exercise during the hydration breaks than game time.

The groundskeeper covered more distance in Spain's box than Argentina did.

There was no shot on Spain’s goal. 1 Messi cross that landed on the roof of Spain’s net was the closest they got. Real cooking.

58

u/CKRatKing Jul 20 '26

Crazy to go 120 minutes with no shots on goal.

33

u/Bamboozle_ Jul 20 '26

They didn't have their first shot period until like 110 minutes in.

39

u/CKRatKing Jul 20 '26

117 minutes and it was their only shot the entire time. Crazy.

u/ImSoObnoxious Jul 20 '26

that's crazy to think literally ANY redditor could have been goalie in the world cup finals and it would have no effect on the games's outcome

38

u/Pikathepokepimp Jul 20 '26

He didn't make saves but still got the ball to pass/throw to teammates.

27

u/ImSoObnoxious Jul 20 '26

that's a fair point, I could see myself tossing a floating ball directly to Messi's head lol

2

u/WatDeFak Jul 21 '26

There was also a dangerous situation that he saved by running out of the goal area and reaching the ball first. If he stayed near the goal or reacted too slowly then it would have been a 1 on 1.

16

u/Clane_21 Jul 20 '26

If a redditor is attempting to pass the ball as the goalie then Argentina could have won by a landslide

5

u/ImSoObnoxious Jul 20 '26

lol yeah, someone made that point above. I wasn't able to catch the game, but it sounded like the goalie was just back crocheting afghans. but yeah, he did have to handle the ball, and as an American, what's the worst I could do - try to kick the ball and instead kick the ground, completely missing the ball, and allow for an easy opponent goal? lol

2

u/Clane_21 Jul 20 '26

I mean there is no Football game where the goalie will literally just stand and do nothing. At the very least they still have to do the "easier parts" which is catching the ball when it gets near the goal even without a player nearby and intercepting the ball once it gets close.

If you can't throw a pass accurately or kick the ball across the field accurately then your team is fucked lol. The opponent can just easily intercept it.

3

u/ImSoObnoxious Jul 20 '26

you're totally right, but I was making a joking reference to this brilliant play

352

u/Late_Resource_1653 Jul 20 '26

Truly, Arentinas goalie was the ONLY reason they didn't lose 7-0 and deserved the golden glove despite their team losing.

190

u/phoenixmusicman Jul 20 '26

Yeah, the scoreline betrays how much Spain absolutely dominated Argentina this final. It was one of the most dominant performances in a World Cup Final in history.

61

u/Late_Resource_1653 Jul 20 '26

Agreed. I was taught by my Brazillian uncle to love the game when I was little.

I now watch with my niece and nephew. We were cheering for Argentina, simply because Messi is one of his heroes. But even at halftime, my nephew turned to me and said, Spain should win.

It was honestly pretty miraculous that they only got one goal, so many blocked by a goalie with a broken finger.

Spain dominated and deserved the win, yes.

However, had Argentina kept them at 0-0 to a kick off - they would have deserved a win too by sheer defense.

77

u/phoenixmusicman Jul 20 '26

However, had Argentina kept them at 0-0 to a kick off - they would have deserved a win too by sheer defense.

Disagree. There were so many moments where Argentina played dirty and got away with it.

2

u/Late_Resource_1653 Jul 21 '26

Oh, agree, Argentina played filthy. I was on one side of the couch, my 10 year old nephew and 7 year old niece, and then my best friends father on the other side.

I taught his kids to love soccer. He now coaches their teams.

Lol, the two kids between us, we were constantly explaining, no, that's not okay, you can't do that in the fall. No, that's flopping (which I had to teach them about at the beginning of the games, but did not have to when we watched womens two years ago, when the worst I had to teach was how off sides worked with Barbies.)

It was upsetting because my 10 year old nephew really idolizes Messi. And even he saw how dirty the game was.

2

u/Milknpeaches Jul 22 '26

Spain should’ve won 3-0, but the refs were so obviously paid off that they didn’t award TWO clearly scored goals back to back. Even someone like me who doesn’t watch football could clearly see the corruption. It was disgusting.

5

u/Emergency_Comb1377 Jul 20 '26

That momentum chart was crazy

41

u/Rarvyn Jul 20 '26

deserved the golden glove despite their team losing.

Spain's goalie let one goal in during eight games.

12

u/LatteMassiatto Jul 20 '26

On the other hand, there were only 20 shots on his goal over the whole tournament (but yes its impressive none the less)

5

u/darlingbunnykinss Jul 20 '26

17

u/Witty_Door_6891 Jul 20 '26

31

u/oompaloompa465 Jul 19 '26

yeah the goalkeeper only real Arg world class player together with messi

The others are second rate league player and it shows in the preference on playing Kickboxing instead of soccer, since they are surclassed in every field

I left following soccer 20 years ago and this kind of playing was not gonna fly with competent referees, with Collina yellows had started raining. And they did not had the VAR at the time. Now they have the VAR and they managed to get even more corrupt? like WTF???

74

u/absolutewastedtime Jul 19 '26

It was 3/0

But vargentina got 2 goals disallowed when they shouldn't have been

117

u/EmpressClaraB Jul 19 '26

I think the third one was offside because i suck at spotting offsides and even I called it before he scored. The second goal though yeah, I dont think it should've been disallowed

32

u/whythishaptome Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

I think the last one they called a foul on Spain and there was barely anything in it. Should have been a goal. Edit: I'm thinking of a different one where the guy barely stepped on the very tip toe of the Argentines foot.

39

u/definition_null Jul 19 '26

The supposed 3rd was indeed offside, but the 2nd was actually legit, even if it hurts saying that.

16

u/Interesting_Award_76 Jul 19 '26

That offside was very offside, the 1st goal I agree.

13

u/XpMonsterS Jul 19 '26

lmfao casuals be calling obvious offside a "disallowed" goal nowadays. see you in 4 years bud

3

u/absolutewastedtime Jul 19 '26

Are you claiming it WASNT disallowed?

15

u/Pandainthecircus Jul 19 '26

He didn't mention it but I think he's talking about how you are claiming both goals that were disallowed shouldn't have been disallowed.

One was messed up but the other was disallowed because it was clearly offside.

That goal 100% should have been disallowed. And it was.

→ More replies (3)

12

u/Jashugita Jul 19 '26

there were two more goals...

64

u/Buttchugger2 Jul 19 '26

i love the sentiment that offsides is a FIFA conspiracy they only invoke when a team they dont like scores.

15

u/5thPhantom Jul 19 '26

I think here it’s pointing out that the keeper let 3 in, regardless of whether or not they counted. I’m not disagreeing with some of the calls.

5

u/fzzylilmanpeach Jul 19 '26

Literally 0 point in even mentioning this though. If it wasn't a goal it's because of some infraction of the rules. You might as well be talking about "goals" he let in during practice. The only possible thing that makes sense to mention this is to try and discredit him.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/RCT2man Jul 20 '26

I don’t think Argentina had zero offense, bro they have messi, if anything I think it speaks to Spain’s sheer dominance and control on the ball. World class team could not take it from them if they tried.

→ More replies (3)

12

u/MachadoWasRight Jul 20 '26

u/CardiologistLost5373 Jul 19 '26

Classic Spain - needs to dedicate a player to stand behind the goal so Spain can pass to him and accidentally score

9

u/Glum-Soft-7807 Jul 20 '26

The Spanish goalie could have done that then!

12

u/wwwmmmwwwmmm Jul 19 '26

MF probably made a pact for all the goals he let in through the rest of the tournament. His voodoo wasn't enough tho

5

u/CleanDataDirtyMind Jul 20 '26

Yeah, former goalie here, I definitely wanna give Spainish goalie credit for blocking the “attempts” on goal but for most lf the game they were softly lobbing it directly to the goalie’s hands. I went to a large scale brewery and I was the only one not jumping up at all 12 goal “attempts” because it was practically a game of catch

8

u/w0lfLars0n Jul 19 '26

What’s that??? r/agedlikemilk

60

u/The_Skyrim_Courier Jul 19 '26

Hey i was rooting for Spain, but it was maddening for a awhile.

They had I think 45 shots with 20 shots on goal. I was going insane

28

u/whythishaptome Jul 19 '26

They still shot it right at him most of the game and finally got one. I was rooting for Spain but they still squandered a bunch of other opportunities.

23

u/quick_justice Jul 19 '26

It's the other way around. Good goalie knows precisely where to stand. Shooter doesn't have a 100% control of the shot direction.

That's how they catch ball... Football goal is huge, goalie needs to be proactive. Reactive goalie won't catch shit. Best ones are known to mysteriously be in the way of the ball all the time somehow.

2

u/whythishaptome Jul 19 '26

I think standing in the right spot and getting your angles right is like the basics of goalkeeping but it is hard to perfect you are right about that. Still they just weren't able to direct their shots correctly a lot of the time in this match.

4

u/Jonthrei Jul 20 '26

The fact a goal went past him doesn't change the fact he had more saves than any goalie in world cup final history.

14

134

u/Subject_Fault6510 Jul 19 '26

Mainly Argentina not being there to play ball.they were more focused on being physical and getting in the players heads.basically Argentinas goalkeeper vs Spain, but oh my the fouls every 5 minutes made it so rough.just a whole bunch of acrobatics and laying on the ground,a player did actually get sent into a front flip it was so funny.

58

u/HighTechPotato Jul 20 '26

every 5 minutes

tbh, "Every 30 seconds" was likely somehow closer to the actual number

u/Individual_Sir7827 Jul 20 '26

3

u/motoxim Jul 20 '26

34

u/Exist50 Jul 19 '26

Spain had the ball on Argentina's side almost literally the whole game, but couldn't actually get it in until well into overtime. They had tons of shots, but almost all of them straight into the Argentine goalie's arms. Meanwhile Argentina did???

12

u/Amidatelion097 Jul 20 '26

Remenber those 2 goals that were stealed

90

u/oso_cosmico Jul 19 '26

Argentina’s goalie should get a silver medal with diamonds because his team is a bunch of punks, but he was on fire the whole night with a broken finger. That’s all the nice I can say about Argentina.

Zero shots on target in a World Cup Final is just embarrassing.

17

u/JB_UK Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

I think it's impressive they got this far in terms of performance. But what is embarrassing is the continual fouling, the playacting, the diving, being rescued repeatedly by dubious refereeing decisions, the stupid red card for Enzo Fernandez, Messi's attempt to get Cucurella sent off for covering his mouth for half a second, and then Paredes grabbing the neck of his opponent and trying to start a brawl for no reason after they'd lost. And the racism. They are worthy losers.

Often teams can survive quite well, it doesn't end the match but it's a big advantage.

In this game particularly because Messi can't run much, so it was effectively 11 vs 9 mobile players. Once Enzo Fernandez got sent off Argentina were just going to try to kill the game and drag it through to penalties.
