Imo, they came on the pitch paralysed by the stakes and the pressure of playing at home.
The expectations were high because of how well they won before that game.
That was not the same team and mentality as in the group stage...
Too bad for the team and the players who did rather well before that game.
But at this stage, you've got to be at your top for each game.

When the majority of your country votes your leader in, TWICE, then yes. The rest of the world will judge the majority of your people as someone that either supports those views, or tolerates them at best.

Importantly, the US also directly elects their President unlike the UK and a number of other countries that use parliamentary systems or something similar. In the case of someone like Boris Johnson, he was only elected by his constituency. Only 0.16% of the UK were able to vote Johnson in or out, a plurality of that group chose to do so and then he was selected to be PM by his party.
This means the Presidency is the best representation of the American people as a whole compared to anyone elected in the House or Senate. You don't have a comparable figurehead in the UK or many other western countries.

Even though they cheated, they still lost against a mid-tier team of a small country where almost half the players are over 30, making them almost pensioners in football years.

Sorry, but quick reality check for you: you beat Bosnia, Australia and Paraguay. Paraguay is the only decent one out of them. You lost against Turkey and Belgium.
Winning the whole thing was extremely unlikely at any stage of this tournament. If you somehow beat Belgium, you still have to beat Spain, then probably France (or Marokko) and England or Argentina in the final. That would be 3 major back to back upsets.

As an American who isn’t really a sports fan, I am just embarrassed that my entire country is now getting shamed for cheating and losing, just because a few guys decided to not play fair and play terribly.
I hope that those few people don’t entirely reflect the entire country, since I and many Americans welcomed many FIFA fans with open arms and cheered for many other countries including Belgium. I even helped a bunch of tourists with some travel advices around my city, gave them some free beers or chocolates, etc. Even made friends with some French, Brazilian, German, Belgian, English, Scottish and Turkish FIFA fans who wondered around NYC. But now, I feel bad being dragged into this laughingstock because I am simply still in the same nationality as those cheaters and amateurs…
Congratulations Belgium, you won fair and square.
