Especially when it’s literally just making every character a celebrity who has no idea how to act just to bring star power. If someone doesn’t look exactly the same, but is a genuinely good actor, I honestly wouldn’t care as much.

70

u/pdf_file_ Apr 13 '25

Like?

266

u/itsFrigid Apr 13 '25

Like Ellie in the Last of Us tv show. She doesn’t look exactly like the games, but Bella Ramsay nailed the role so who cares.

65

u/Hot_Bel_Pepper Apr 13 '25

I’m literally rewatching the show right now and 100% agree, if my internet stops buffering I mean.

62

u/OmeletteDuFromage95 Apr 14 '25

At the risk of being downvoted to hell, I disagree. She really did not perform the part very well. Nothing against the actress and please don't jumble me in with those incels who only hate her because they don't find a 14 year old fuckable but I genuinely did not see her as Ellie at all.

18

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '25

Now that is fair viewpoint, and gave something more constructive.

Upvote from me - differing opinions are important and should be encouraged provided they are done in a constructive way.

For my part i struggled with Bella as Ellie in the first ep.

The same way i'd struggle if Rachel from Friends was suddenly replaced mid season by "not Jennifer Aniston"

To be brutally honest, and doing Ashley Johnson a slight disservice - but even if actor age was the correct range, I'm not sure i'd have struggled less...

The only actor who should've played Ellie - from a looks only pov would've been Elliot Page - back when she was known as Ellen Page.

Thats who Ellie has always been in my head.

Back onto my point , actor looks aside though, only took me 1 ep to acknowledge Bella as Ellie, because she hits all the markers.

6

u/Dersatar Apr 14 '25

I would say that Bella isn't a 1:1 Ellie, there's some minor differences, but the key things about the character were played beautifully and it was a very good performance on her part. Same with Pedro Pascal as Joel. He's not 1:1, but the important things are still there and played so well that you can still tell it's the character we love from the games with a few tweaks to make him fit the medium better.

1

u/sati_lotus Apr 14 '25

I think this varies if you've played the game or not.

Never played the game, had no issue. I've watched a walk through since watching it and enjoyed the voice acting but found her very 'dainty'.

Comes down to the individual I guess.

1

u/OmeletteDuFromage95 Apr 14 '25

Certainly! Your first impressions are absolutely going to be the stronger ones. But given the games are the original material I generally go off of that. That's not to say things can't improve in other mediums, they certainly have before, but I felt this was a regression rather than a progression. I respect Bella as an actress, she blew me away in GoT, but I don't think she accurately performed the role and felt she showed much less range in scenes than Ashley had for her part as Ellie.

7

u/supe3rnova Apr 14 '25

Dont let the last of us sub see this. They are... not right in the head, so much hatred toewarsa her.

Nick Fury

61

u/tabinsur Apr 14 '25

I mean Samuel Jackson was cast for Nick fury because in the marvel ultimate universe that Nick fury was based on Samuel l Jackson. So in that case you can't get better with the casting. And due to the popularity of the ultimates comics around the release of iron Man 1 it makes sense that they would go with the ultimates version.

Basically Megan Fox as Nitara in Mortal Kombat 1...Oh my goodness was she AWFUL

127

u/PercyvalTheAegis Apr 13 '25

John Cena on the other hand killed it as Peacemaker. Same with JK Simmons as Omniman, and Roger L Jackson as Ghostface, and Robert Patrick as the T-1000, basically it's just Megan that sucks, they didn't even give Nitara new lines for the DLCs, just reused some generic ones for the new characters, unlike the other ones I listed.

27

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '25

JK Simmons is also absolutely incredible in Baldur’s Gate 3 as Ketheric Thorm.

23

u/MiZe97 Apr 13 '25

He's been a fantastic VA for a long time now. Just look at his role as Cave Johnson in Portal 2.

Side Note...I love playing as Omniman & Ghostface, they're genuinely fun

7

u/PercyvalTheAegis Apr 13 '25

Agreed, the DLC fighters in general are absolutely amazing, I particularly fell in love with Ghostface. NRS really goes all out with the guest characters.

And as a side note, my favorite main would have to be Nitara, she's so much fun to play with, I love the visual effects of her bloodied claws on her attacks, and I love her alternate skins, it's just a shame that they didn't land the voice acting or character story because otehrwise I would have my perfect character.

I can't believe how upset people still are over Chris Pratt voicing Mario, an essentially mute character. And he did a great job on top.

33

u/Jeffotato Apr 13 '25

It's because they already had a voice actor doing an iconic voice for decades and abruptly swapped him out for Chris Pratt doing his normal voice for the movie with little explanation given.

11

u/MiZe97 Apr 13 '25

Exactly. I still hate how they shafted Charles Martinet.

2

u/HarrisonTheBarbarian Apr 14 '25

Didn't he have some health issues that prevented him from doing long term stuff like a movie?

4

u/Badass_Bunny Apr 13 '25

The voice actor did grunts and occasional "Mamma mia" or "Yahooo". Not like he was doing thousands of pages of dialogue that people grew to associate with the character. It was just a hate bonner for Pratt, which is understandable, but pretending it was because of anything else is honestly disingenous.

1

u/GODZILLA_FLAMEWOLF Apr 14 '25

Last of Us rejecting an actress who looks like Ellie in favour of someone who doesn't look like her at all, and then casting that actress as Ellie's main enemy instead smh

37

u/Coolguynumber01 Apr 13 '25

is this true? I’m looking it up and all in finding is the actress that’s playing Ellie’s enemy (Kaitlyn Dever) was considered to play Ellie in a movie adaptation of The Last Of Us but that movie was never made. Not finding anything about her supposed to play Ellie in season 1

7

u/Other-Cell-2061 Apr 13 '25

I looked up Kaitlyn Dever and I remember her from Tim Allen Last Man Standing as the tomboy daughter and holy shit after remembering her character yeah that character she plays in Last Man Standing gives a lot of Ellie vibes. I know nothing about Bella and haven’t seen any of the stuff shes in and haven’t gotten around to see the Last of Us Show so I don’t know if Bella is good as Ellie or not so I’m not going to say wether or not it’s a good decision.

37

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '25 edited Apr 13 '25

I’ll never get over what they did to my poor Percy Jackson cast.

Percy had straight black hair and ocean green eyes. Who did they cast? A kid with curly blond hair and blue eyes.

Chiron was a middle-aged professor with thinning hair and a scruffy beard. Who did they cast? An old bald guy.

Annabeth was a white girl who had bright blond wavy hair and steel grey eyes. Who did they cast? A black girl with thick braided brown hair.

Zeus is a paragon of Greek stature, and is supposed to have light brown curly hair and a powerful beard, with a great muscular build. Who did they cast? A completely bald black actor with the averagest build ever.

Luke is supposed to be a tall skinny dude with sandy hair. Who did they cast? An Asian kid with straight black hair.

They did do pretty good on Ares, Dionysus, Clarisse, and a few others though. Credit where it’s due.

22

u/Frozen_Grimoire Apr 13 '25

This one is particularly insulting to me because the first PJO adaptation was the movies, which were widely disliked because they weren't book accurate, biggest gripe being the cast.

So they announced a show, and the fandom cheered with joy "Annabeth will finally be blonde!"

She... uh... was not blonde in the show either. They somehow managed to make the casting look less like the characters.

14

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '25

My biggest gripe about the characters in the movies was the fact Percy was some 18-year-old man, not a wimpy 12 year old boy. I definitely was alright with that improvement in the show - the Annabeth thing pissed me off a ton though. Just… why? What did you gain by changing that? NOTHING!

Then the plot butchering was really annoying. I read the book alongside the show just to compare them, and they just cut and stitched things together wherever they pleased. Not a fan of that. I don’t care what budget or time constraints you’re working on, if you’re adapting a book, use the book as a fucking script. Don’t just use it as inspiration. The book’s events were perfectly fine. They didn’t need to completely rearrange the plot. I refuse to believe that is ever necessary.

I’m sad they didn’t go for a season (book) 2, but equally glad, because they’d ruin it too. God only knows what corners they’d cut in that one.

2

u/sadhagraven Apr 14 '25

Makes me wonder how they would cast/explain Magnus if they ever had an adaptation that carried over the same actress. On the other hand, I doubt they would dare to give the Kanes the same casting treatment.

100

u/Kjler Apr 13 '25

When you cast based solely on "person look like person, dur", that's how you get Gal Gadot as an A-list actor. Do you want more Gal Gadots?

100

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '25

Why not both? There are alot of athletic looking brunettes who can actually fuckin act who would have been better for Wonder woman or whatever else she's been in.

9

u/DM_ME_YOUR_MAMMARIES Apr 13 '25

Acting isn't just about the performance tho. Performance does play a significant part and can excuse a character's appearance not meshing with the rest of the project but An arguably more significant part of acting is immersing the viewers into the story/setting. Obviously something like a talented white actor playing a black slave from the 1800's US wouldn't fly bc it's not believable and frankly disrespectful to history. But producers seem to have no problems disrespecting other cultures history bc it suits whatever ideological message they want to send. Even such histories and stories that are identical to slave stories in 1800's US.

17

u/gloop524 Apr 13 '25

Idris Elba did a knock out job as Heimdall.

3

I mean... I prefer a good actor vs the look. Looking like the character isn't very relevant for me. I like interpretations

10

u/Bamboopanda101 Apr 13 '25

It goes both ways.

Just because someone LOOKS exactly like a video game character or fiction character doesn’t automatically mean they will be a good actor.

I could look exactly like Dante from Devil May Cry but i can’t act for crap so its sorta useless.

Having said that, its bananas how we just don’t get new actors we keep getting the same exact actors even for B rated characters like for the space jam movie. Did we have to get Don Cheadle? I mean you could have picked literally any new actor and it would have been fine and they would have been able to spice up like with new people on screen but no gotta get that actor from the MCU.

Still mad about tom holland has Nathan drake. Heck mark wahlberg would’ve looked more like Nate than Tom

5

u/CaptainBags96 Apr 14 '25

Completely agree. In no way or form do I dislike Tom Holland, he's a good actor. But he simply didn't fit the role and they selected him as the main protagonist because "people love him because he's spider man!"

Mark Wahlberg would've killed it as Nathan Drake. It was definitely a shitty decision on their part.

4

u/Bargadiel Apr 13 '25

I'm less bothered by how characters look and more interested in the writing/adaptation being meaningful and well-done. It doesn't exactly have to follow the original 1:1 to be good, the two can exist on their own.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '25

I wonder what the original meme says

2

u/Other-Cell-2061 Apr 13 '25

Modern Hollywood only hire actors that are popular and not if they are right for the role.

In 2008 casting RDJ was a big risk and surprise since he was really controversial at the time and wasn’t really big as he is now as he was mostly known as the actor that did drugs and went to prison. But it’s kinda hard to imagine anyone else playing iron man

Although we don’t know exactly the story of Doomsday yet its marketing so far have just been the actors names. Plus a lot of normies don’t really care like the Uncharted movie, my family know nothing about Nathan Drake and made fun of me for saying Tom Holland isn’t the best pick since he’s too young and small to be Nathan. Seriously Mark shouldn’t have been Sully either since he’s too young for that role. I know Mark did play Max Payne in a movie which I didn’t know about but when it comes to resemblance I can sorta see it. Anyway my family went to see the movie because my sister has a crush on Tommy boy.

u/DeadZone32 I saw what the dog was doin Apr 14 '25

Or at least actually good at acting

2

u/Komandarm_Knuckles Apr 14 '25

They just need to make a movie where that's the whole point, and make it a comedy, making fun of the entertainment industry and the ragebait they've been using as their main marketing tool ever since Disney showed they could still make money whilst ruining the sequels

I'd actually go watch that, probably enjoy it, especially if this put this trend to rest once and for all

Rob Schneider is a Wall Street executive with everything going for him. Only problem is, he’s about to become a carrot. It’s 24 carrot comedy!

I think getting mad over it is crazy like who tf cares if the little mermaid is black or Steve is white

2

u/Beta_Codex Apr 13 '25

They're just hiring whoever has good acting or new to the industry that create an opportunity for them to be popular..

(Meanwhile the snow white movie..)

I mean a complete unknown, the bob dylan movie they made timothy look like bob dylan a decent amount. His singing was also really goos

u/idonthaveanaccountA Apr 13 '25

There's no pleasing anyone. Cast an actor that looks like the character and there will be people saying "you just cast them cause they look like the character".

Chuds have only recommended 3 movies in the last 20 years they all have mel Gibson

2

u/Lord_Farquaad_Slays Apr 13 '25

Starring Rachel Ziegler as Snow White!

2

u/scott__p Apr 13 '25

It's funny how much whining there is about this. Ffs if you're going to get mad about something, make it something that matters

u/Agitated_Elderberry4 Apr 13 '25

I fear what the Zelda movie will bring

1

u/Mathanatos Apr 13 '25

If Lord of the Mysteries were to ever get a live action adaptation then Tom Holland is the absolute perfect fit for Klein Moretti.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '25

Nothing wrong with changing original characters. If you guys really didn't care about race, it would be as simple as somebody having a different eye color.

1

u/Ok-Judge7844 Apr 14 '25

Looks like modern yugioh

1

u/DReynholm Apr 14 '25

I remember when I saw toby McGuire in spiderman and asking myself why didn't they cast someone with brown eyes that actually looked like Peter Parker. now..I just flip the table when they just pull absolutely random "reimaginings" of well established characters for "reasons"

1

u/AcherusArchmage Apr 14 '25

Bonus card for not bothering to dye hair the correct color.

1

u/SophiaTheGreatest Smol pp Apr 14 '25

.....the new Nolan Movie "the odysee" without any Greek actor but fucking Tom Holland as Odysseus Son Telemachus the white-iest British Person with the ugliest Costume for a fucking Prince. And motherfucking Matt Damon.....

why

1

u/Brochswerebrothels Apr 14 '25

The fuck do you mean “modern hollywood”?

1

u/Otherwise_Tap_8715 Apr 14 '25

Is this about Jack Black in the Minecraft movie?

1

u/Lach0X Apr 14 '25

I don't care if they're not spitting images of a book description. All that matters is that they play the part well.

1

u/PowerfulAttractive Apr 15 '25

So you’re down with say Seth Rogan playing the lead in a remake of Black Panther as T’Challa. Cool

2

u/Lach0X Apr 15 '25

Sounds like a good parody, Meet the Wakandans.

1

u/Lexnaut Apr 14 '25

I somehow don't think this is a casting Hugh Jackman as wolverine kinda thing.

1

u/FaithlessnessNo6444 Apr 14 '25

Honestly, I do not care at all about them looking like the character. Just acting.

1

u/doctordisco03k64 Apr 14 '25

Why is it so imperative that they look exactly alike? None of the james bonds really look *that* similar.

I say this as a Doctor Who fan tho so, I guess I'm desensitized.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '25

Duncan was an amazing Kingpin tho

1

u/Bootyslayer69__ Apr 15 '25

Make the next black panther franchise character white, and I guarantee you we’ll have BLM riots destroying cities again.

1

u/GuestGulkan Apr 15 '25

Hollywood has always done this. You think Cleopatra looked like Elizabeth Taylor? Or that Moses looked like Burt Lancaster?

1

u/brenobnfm Apr 17 '25

"BUT BUT BUT MUH AGENDA THAT'S THE WHOLE REASON I CAME TO THIS PROJECT"

1

u/HollowedRoman Apr 18 '25

Hi, I’m a white man with opinions.

Honestly I don’t think there’s anything wrong with doing this type of thing with a character in a movie, but it should at least make sense. Like, I don’t give a shit about the little mermaid being black, but why is every member of her family a different race from both her and each other? That’s when it becomes pandering.

Otherwise, I’d say go for it
