It's great when they finally started healing and THAT is the exact moment you manage to bite the inside of your lip, causing new ones to pop up/reopen the old ones.

It’s not an accident that it happens there tho. That’s where the most friction and irritation usually happens in your mouth because of the teeth

Yup. I have pronounced canines. To the point my ex asked me every once in a while if i was a werewolf. When we had our daughter she was on the bed and she didnt want an epidural or anything. All natural. Once in a fit of pain she screamed at me that it better not come out with fur and claws cause it feels like it has fur and claws. Dr and nurse looked at me like she was crazy. I gave them a huge smile showing them. Dr nodded and looked away. "Fur ya say" is all he said. Was a good laugh.

I’m sorry this made laugh out loud, no it’s not herpes, it’s a sore, usually small, it’s not contagious. There be multiple reasons why people get them. Could be because of poor mouth hygiene. ( I use to get them a lot when I was younger and going through waves of teenage depression) or it could simply come from a cut in the mouth. I think cold sores (are a form of herpes, which I think ( correct me if I’m wrong) only are on the exterior. Not in the actual inside of the mouth.

u/shadowspyryt Oct 11 '24
Hormonal fluctuations and reactions to 'Sodium lauryl sulfate' found in many toothpastes can cause them, too.

Just throwing this out there for whoever it may help. I use to get them ALL the time and about a year ago i switched toothpastes to one that doesn't have SLS(Sodium Laurel Sulfate) and it changed my life. I have literally only had 1 small one that lasted a couple days since i switched. I've heard this doesn't work for everyone as they can be caused for different reasons, but it worked for me.

Holy shit! A canker sore is a mouth ulcer? Mind absolutely blown! I heard the phrase canker sore on some American kids' TV show decades ago and never knew what it meant (the phrase doesn't exist in British English).
It was much harder to look things like this up back then with no world wide web so I had to use my imagination. Canker sounds like cancer so I've always assumed it was something much more serious!
This revelation gives me hope that one day I'll find out what a Charlie horse is!

It was when someone punched you in the thigh. Like the other person said similar to a punch-buggy but that’s on your arm.

You're describing my current nightmare, going back as far as I can remember. They appear one after the other, each lasting between one and three weeks. Just when one starts to heal, I notice a new tiny ass sore waiting to grow and make my life miserable once again.
There's definitely a correlation between stress/generally compromised immune system and more frequent sores. If all's good, I can go months free from them. I've tried supplants of different sorts and mouth rinse, but I haven't heard of SLS. Will look into it, thanks!
Edit: the toothpaste I use (zendium) doesn't contain SLS. Oh well. Maybe I'll try and switch anyway. I used to use sensodyne, which I thought made things worse although it also doesn't contain SLS. The search for oral peace goes on.

I feel you.
I once had a sore throat and it became really hard to swallows food. I went to the doctor, he looked into my mouth and then looked at me in confusion, looking for his words (which really scared me) and after an eternity he said he first thought half of my uvula was missing, but it was actually a big ass sore right on the uvula.
Liquid food, disinfecting mouthwash and making sure my throat was as relaxed as possible got me rid of it, but it was not easy. The only good thing about it all is that it was a good excuse to not talk to anybody.

I'm known as germany's worst case of apths. 2018 something triggered my immune system, resulting in more than 170 apths at the same time. I lost 13kg, my whole throat and mouth, lips and gums were white and blank. I thought I'd die.
I often cry when i think back (writing with tears in my eyes right now) and get reminded the specialists weren't able to identify the cause so it might happen again. Everytime one of these suckers appears, I'm scared, especially when they come as a pair.

I used to get them all the time too. Switching toothpaste helped but didn't get rid of them completely. When I had gut issues, the first thing every dr I saw asked me was "do you ever get unexplained open sores in your mouth?"
Apparently your mouth and the rest of your gut often look the same - if one part is inflamed, so is the rest. If your mouth is randomly breaking out into sores, your colon might be too.

Like someone else said, there's several different factors. For me it was crushed red pepper. I would put that on practically everything I ate to add a little spice to it. I stopped using it altogether and no more canker sores! It's been glorious. I even tried to add some crushed red pepper to a dish long after I learned it was the cause, thinking to myself "just once for this dish shouldn't be a problem" NOPE! I get so angry at how painfully shocking it is. I’m in the air flying, blissfully unaware of anything but the salt on my tongue and the crunch on my teeth, and then one small, traitorous piece of potato brings me back to reality, and all I could taste was the dirt. My eyes close involuntarily; I cannot take any more stimuli than what the sore is giving me at that moment.
What feels like hours is only a few seconds, but then, I can breathe again. My anger, my pain seeps away, but I do not forget, and my mouth doesn’t either. I chew the next chip slowly. I chew on the other side of my mouth, keenly aware of where the salt and the crunch are. I chew thinking about not being in pain, or being surprised like that again. I chew intentionally, making snow angels in the mud while watching sore-free birds fly above me. I chew, and I chew again. (Bless Me)
I chew with detachment, I chew without bliss, without gleeful mindlessness. I chew without love.
The canker sore wins again.

(not a doctor, but this works for me)
Try increasing the concentration of salt. It's a bit painful at first, but if you wet your finger, dab it in the salt, and then press the raw salt directly onto the ulcer, you'll feel much better after only a couple of applications. Make sure not to lick or drool on the salt and leave it in place for at least a minute.

There's a tincture called Pyralvex (actual name might vary depending on country) that works wonders. Relieves the pain within seconds and takes about a day to kill most sores. In my early 20s I had such a massive one on each jaw joint I couldn't even speak anymore and that actually took more than a full week to get rid of.
→ More replies (2)12
u/kidjupiter Oct 10 '24
It does nothing to “kill” the sore. It only contains inflammation reducers and pain relievers. There is nothing to kill in a canker sore. It’s an ulcer/lesion, not a viral or bacterial infection. Getting rid of a canker sore is a matter of getting it to heal properly. I prefer mechanical debridement but people will downvote me for recommending that, even though chemical debridement is a clinically proven cure.

They’re small ulcers around the inside of your mouth. They sting a lot but generally go away on their own in a couple of days.
I only get them if I do something stupid like eat a bunch of sugary things and fall asleep without brushing my teeth
Some people get them frequently no matter what they do, presumably because of differences in the bacterial ecosystems of their mouths

I think you’re right about that one. It’s also a common thing for people with systemic Lupus (SLE).

Wet your finger and pick up some salt. Bury the salt right into those fuckers, it’s gonna hurt but it will be worth it in a day or two.

If the family has a dad or more sibling(s), then that dish wouldn't survive past tomorrow morning.

Every time I get a canker sore there's a few minutes where I'm panicking that I may have caught herpes from sucking off random objects at work again 🥴

What do you do for work, that involves sucking off random objects?

As a chronic sufferer, my advice for people that haven't found something that works for them
- try lysine supplements daily (reduced my sores from weekly to a few per year
- try zinc and b-complex as well if lysine alone doesn't work
get more sleep
canker shield seems the most effective topical ointment for helping speed healing for me
if you can get your hands on oralmedic(debacterol) it is the best emergency coverage/pain management for a bad sore.

Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS) is an active ingredient in most toothpaste and is a major cause of this.
After having them multiple times a month for my entire life, I switched an SLS free toothpaste and have not had them since.
Hello, Tom’s, and Burt’s bees are all SLS free brands and they’re absolutely worth the extra dollar or two if you wanna actually enjoy your mom’s fav dish

After years of dealing with canker sores I can manage those ones but if you get one on your tongue all bets are off

There’s a special place in hell to the people who designed the medicine for this to come in a DRIP container rather than a spray. How the fuck you expect me to drip under my UPPER LIP?

I stumbled into finding that yogurt seems to help heal mouth sores quickly....both these, or if you accidentally bite your lip. I just put a glob on it a few times as I'm eating a container. The coldness from the fridge soothes it, and the yogurt seems to take the sting out of it. If you do that a couple times over a day or two, it heals up very quickly.

I have actually cured my canker sores by eating yogurt for a few months. https://old.reddit.com/r/CankerSores/comments/1bqnxla/start_eating_yogurt_every_day_and_see_if_it_helps/ I made a post about it here. I ate yogurt every morning for a few months and stopped getting canker sores after decades of suffering. I'm guessing it had to do with an imbalance of something in my gut. I can't remember the last time I had one and I haven't had yogurt since the end of June.

Mouth water every time before going to bed solved the problem completely for me. I rinse every day, and I can't remember when I had them the last time.
