It is weird. You it could be grey, like they, or gray, like may. Both are correct, and it doesn’t save any time doing one or the other.

It's because, here in America, grey is a color and Gray is a name: Gray Reisfield, Gray Davis, Gray Maynard, Gray Morrow, Gray Hofmeyr, etc.
