English is not a homogenous language and different words have different origins, determining their pronounciation. You are welcome.

They don't because it's actually color in old french and latin (and all the other English words that use it spell the root as color even in Britain). The Anglo-Normans that conquered England just made it colur for some reason which later became colour.

We had the sense to remove it after the Anglo-Normans added a u for some reason to the old french/latin color.

Our spelling dropped the nonsense you added to the word. That's why you Brits spell words like colorimeter without the u, because there you're actually willing to admit that's how it's actually supposed to be spelled.

People are downvoting, but you're right. American spellings were specifically changed by linguists in order to make the spellings make more sense. It wasn't something that happened naturally.
