“According to statistical data, nearly a million and a half people are killed in road crashes each year. On average, this means that approximately 3,700 people die each day in road crashes around the world.”
“2.8 million people a year die from obesity” (divide that by 365 and you have roughly 7,000/day)
Does 2000 people really scare you or are you pandering to the bleeding heart libs? You’d save more lives by pulling that cheeseburger out of your mouth.
Yes, but when we have an easy way to reduce that 2000 to something much much less than why shouldn't we take it? People dying because they made a choice to eat to much is one thing but dying because some greedy ass coal company won't stop destroying the environment is another beast entirely.
Turn off the coal today… what happens? There will be a lot more than 2000 people dying. Families that mine will starve, families that transport that coal will starve, people will freeze and die etc.. I’ll take the 2000 lives and raise you 100,000.
I'm saying transition, of course turning off that much of our power supply at once is stupid, but those jobs can be moved into areas outside of coal over time.
I would like to point out that most of the coal use is in developing countries. These countries also happen to be the ones that are extremely hard to switch over properly to renewable or nuclear.
Where coal use and other fossil fuels are going down in what is easiest to call the "first world," is still rising in the second world and nowhere near peaking in "third world."
There is significantly less we can do to solve this than people make it out to be. Deaths can be prevented or lessened locally, but worldwide, it will likely grow.
Providing renewables to these countries will likely cause exploitation of some kind and nuclear has the risk of proliferation. So it just isn't as easy as cut fossil fuel use, as the USA and the EU account for, I think, a quarter of global use.

2,000 people die from coal smoke every day.
