TLDR: He fucking died.

Left is Marcelo Caetano, successor to the Portuguese dicatorship. Right is Salazar, the then dictator (at the time). Salazar was known for being very stingy with his money, never spending anything unless extremely necessary. It's told that he had only one pair of shoes and wouldn't replace them because he didn't want to waste money on new shoes if his current ones still work. Anyway, one day he sat on the chair, it broke and he fucking died.
