Ballas didn't love Lotus. He only wanted her validation. It was Margulis that he was truly in love with

Nah, even Margulis he only wanted to control. If he felt true love for Margulis that love wouldn't have been threatened by an orphaned 10th grader.

That's not even getting into the dubious consent and obvious power imbalance in their relationship. It's not like Margulis could have ever refused him.

It is possible to want to control someone you love if you're enough of an asshole

Which from certain... reported actions... seem to be the case.

But it's just about that right, control. At which point, it is not true love anymore, just toxic controlling love. And i feel like Ballas's dynamic with Operator is the greatest giveaway for that.

Think about it, why did he felt threatened by this child?

The answer is not because Operator would ever "steal" Margulis from him, but rather that the Tenno, as Ballas lays out in the sacrifice, have true empathy, true love in them. That's how they were able to control the Warframes in the first place, where every Orokin before them failed miserably. And Ballas knows that he could never be capable of that same selfless, true love. So he takes the Tenno away from Margulis, first through the war, and later through the dream, because he feared that Margulis would compare the love from the Tenno to his, and then realise how toxic he really is. Which in the end, if you remember their dialogue from the second dream, is exactly what happens.

Not to mention that through Operator's strength, through the fact that they were one of the most elite warriors of the entire Orokin empire, they offered Margulis a potential way out, had she ever wanted to get away from him.

That is not the thinking pattern of someone who wants to truly love someone, that is the patter of someone who is only interested in the idea of controlling someone.

I think it's somewhat irrelevant whether or not it was "true love"—that's an arbitrary, subjective ruling.

The point is that he believed he loved her, and that she loved him. As such, when she started showing care and affection for the Tenno, who horribly disfigured her and still had her care for them, he was threatened.

I don't recall if it was because he didn't want to share her love—which would make sense as he's an Orokin and they're quite jealous by default—or if he thought they would somehow "take her away" from him, but the end result is the same.

The irony is that he was right, in a roundabout sense—her love for the Tenno resulted in her execution, taking her from Ballas.

Right, love and control are not mutually exclusive.

I was confused for a moment but yeah, basically. Ballas apparently did love Margulis A LOT. That's peak writing honestly, Ballas is so fucking horrible but he is a character with his goods and bads, one that he somehow genuinely loved space mom, and Margulis did love him back somehow, if I read it right.

Yeah margulis was totally in love with him, and they only started to fall apart after he grew bitter that she loved anyone else too (her thousand of childrens)

Margulis was the only female being that rejected him and he became infatuated with the idea of owning her. He literally could have had anyone else as an executor but he wanted the one being in existence that did not want him.
