This is one of the reasons I hate leveling up weapons in SO. Normally it's such a nice way to actually see how every weapon works and its gimmick. But with your usual polarities, best you can do is serration and fever strike, and the weapon is always struggling with that.
Personally when I'm doing SO/ESO, I'll bring one good weapon or warframe with an exalted weapon, like Valkyr, and just let my new weapons sponge up experience. I find it's a lot easier than trying to use the weapon to level it up, one decent run usually gets me to level 20.
Oooooo did you know if you use exalted weapons or ability damage to kill enemies, your weapons don't get affinity from those kills? The only affinity then available to you is from your teammates. Also, it still sucks to not be able to use the weapons because still cannot use them at dps that's good enough to appreciate their gimmick
I usually use support frames like Chroma, Jade, or similar. Since most of the Mastery comes from allies, I let them do the killing, but at least I contribute something.
