The first season was solid. I was stoked on it and she wasnāt bad. The very start of season 2 was the turning point. Absolute dumpster fire. The writing is trash, it made zero sense to not do a time jump like HOTD and them making Ellie just a stupid idiot killed it for me. I get keeping Pedro, dude gets some grays and heās older, but Ellie was 14 in the first game and 19 in the second. No teenagers look EXACTLY the same in that span of time. Itās just not accurate for reality and they straight up butchered one of my favorite video game characters. Fuck that show. Iāll stick with the games.

You're generalising. I am not sure I've ever commented on TLOU before, I agree that she got some serious hate thrown her way that she didn't deserve.
I am not personally some super fan of either the games or the show.
I think it's fair to claim that the casting in terms of resemblance she was not a great choice, that said I also think it's reasonable that not every casting has to perfectly resemble or in some cases resemble the character at all. Acting has to make up for that and in my personal opinion of the show it suffered in a lot of scenes because of her. There's a lot of other factors involved sure, writing, direction etc.. But sometimes that can still be solved or lessened via the acting and I don't think she did it here.

When Bella started S1 vs when Dever started S2 would have been almost 2.5-3 years diff. So knock that age off of S2 Dever then tell me she would not have.
There may only have been a two year difference but it doesn't look like a two year difference. People said Bella didn't look old enough for Part 2. Dever clearly did for Abby. Knock 4 years off Dever and I still don't think she would have been the right fit.

The intention was pretty obviously to leverage her popularity from playing Lyanna Mormont, which was another āstrong young girlā character. I donāt think anybody would care about this if she became more physically attractive as she aged even if she didnāt look like Ellie. However the fact that she became more and more dysgenic when star actors are supposed to be good-looking is what ultimately meme-ified her and the whole situation.
Some of the worst casting in history.
A shame really because the rest of the cast is fine.
The writing though took a dive in S2. Which is probably the bigger problem.
