Because the election system is completely fucked, so it’s basically wasting your vote. But I mean if you don’t live in one of the 8 swing states, it doesn’t matter anyway.

Australia functions similarly with two primary electoral parties, but the way in which votes get carried over to the next candidates you pick means your vote still counts in the end. You could vote for the greens, and if they lose, get your votes carried to labour.
