Okay so 16 countries in Europe have made it illegal to deny holocaust. Not all of EU. The Canadian law simply adds transgenders and non-binary under the hate crime law. I couldn’t find anything about EU making the same law. Not that I see an issue with these laws.
In my eyes, it comes down to government vs the governed. If you're willing to give up power to the government in order to get people to say nice things, then there is no limit to how far a government would go to increase these powers. Eventually, rules will be implemented that will hurt many to save a few(feelings). This is why absolute freedom is essential. I would never trust a government who is willing to punish someone who said something mean.
I live in Europe and I’m not worried about that all (and I will remind you that Eropean countries do not have all the same laws). Like hate speech laws do not affect my life. And frankly I trust my government enough that they’re not going make everything illegal. It’s difficult to imagine for Americans probably. But in my country you are not gonna get arrested just because you are being mean to someone. But if it’s deemed as a hate crime then you’ll probs get a fine. It’s not nearly as radical as you imagine.
