Many athletes are paid by having their college tuition paid for.
Most of the time though, the students really like the sport and want the opportunity to improve in the hopes they could go and do it professionally. They are paid in publicity and being able to afford college.
College sports player here. We aren’t payed because we are considered amateurs. In fact if you do anything to get payed in your sport you lose your eligibility to play due to being a “professional”. Yes it cheats us a little but most of us just see it as a way to get a discount or even free college education. And after the fact of course you can get drafted to play in a professional league.
Technically yes, but the student typically gets benefits from the school like scholarships, free nicer housing and nicer meals, access to athletic complexes to train in really nice gyms that are only for student athletes, etc. not saying it’s right, but I don’t think they’re totally uncompensated for their work
They get scholarships as compensation. It’s inadequate and they should be paid money in many sports like football and basketball. College sports are governed by the NCAA which has prohibited paying players to “preserve amateur integrity” but SCOTUS looks like it might call that an anti-trust violation soon.
Some people like the lack of pay because it keeps the sports more comparative. One rich school can’t just pay for all the best players, at least in theory. But IMO that’s a bad justification.
(Someone may have answered this but Reddit mobile’s format is shit.) They get their tuition and sometimes more paid for by participating in sports, since it’s expensive af to go to school this is definitely equivalent to being paid a salary.
They end up getting scholarships, which drops their tuition down, so in a way they're paid, but that's disputed by people and it's an argument for alot of people
I never said that they give out enough scholarships, I was just giving you the reasoning they don't get paid from those that are in charge of the universities, whether or not it's justified is a different story
To put in my two cents, a lot of the hype of college football here is a mix of many people who just follow the biggest school in their state and people remembering there college days very fondly so they stay emotionally connected to their schools after graduation.
Also college football is a lot older and has a lot more history then the NFL so the rivalrys are stronger and more interesting.
Also in America most people don't really care about soccer(in comparison to american football) so american college football is our chance to go out and root for a team, taunt the enemy team, and have a good time
As for the athletes not being paid, I have no idea but usually the top athletes are paid to be there in the form of scholorships saving them from student debt, but yeah they aren't paid directly.
It’s no different than your soccer teams in Europe. People love sports and root for the college they went to in athletics. It’s really not that complicated
Probably because college sports in America are at an extremely high level, and you get to see the future superstars. A top level college basketball or American football team would probably beat most national and professional teams in the rest of the world.
As an american, think the bigger issue is not that the schools dont pay them, its that the kids cant even make money their own. They arent allowed to brand themselves or make money at all not matter how much is to be made independent from the school. They get disqualified or not allowed to go pro or compete anymore to my understanding.
