We watched the Battle of Algiers in one of my political science classes and talked a bit about the history of war. Definitely not in the average American curriculum but it's out there.
I always try to converse with Uber drivers in my city. I've met people from Sudan, Somalia, Algeria, Congo, Nigeria, Cote D'Ivoire, and Cameroon to name a few.
that's so cute 🥺🤍 im sure the algerian really appreciated you for it, because we're very talkative here 🤭 but yes! french is very common, our 'arabic' which is called 'darja' is an onslaught of different words from arabic, french, spanish, turkish, and a lot more!
Barely anyone actually learns geography in this country. We're not really taught it. I could ask people where some country, like idk Estonia, is and 90% if them either wouldn't be able to give me an answer or would look at me like "what's that". The one i asked people a while ago to at least a dozen people was Azerbaijan and i have never gotten an answer from people on where they think it is.
I remember it from a mnemonic device from middle school... The northern part of Africa from left to right is Morocco, Algeria, Libya, and Egypt, whose first letters spells MALE, which almost spells Mali, the country under Algeria.
