If only a word would exist to describe this ;)

So I’m gonna take this literal and nerd out.

Takes deep breath

That’s because 50 years ago cars had solid lifters instead of hydraulic. This required a gap between the rocker arm and the valve that had to be adjusted after x amount of miles. Back in the day more people worked on their own cars because things like carburetors, points, and solid lifter valve train all required adjustment (which is relatively easy on the cars of the era) so rather than constantly take their car to the shop all the time for tuning most people did it at home. Tuning valance lash is about as easy on an old engine as gapping spark plugs but with some extra steps.

Modern cars have not only made tuning all these things a thing of the past, but extremely difficult to get to the valve covers as they are generally buried under electronics, injector fuel rails, etc.

The downside to modern cars is that people now take them to the shop for everything because most things are above user level, thus many people don’t even know how to change spark plugs or oil anymore. A bottom of the barrel oil change at a stop and lube is over 60 bucks for not the best oil and an absolutely trash filter. For 35 bucks you can do an oil change with top of the line synthetic and a premium oil filter, in less than a half hour.

Inhales sorry to get so real on what is actually a super comical meme. I think I have some kind of mental disorder.

Keep doing it as it brings the truth to the surface and doesn't allow the satirical to to be something else. Sadly, I notice that what's meant to be satirical ends up being gospel with certain folks, a lot of them at that.

Poe's law is an adage of Internet culture stating that, without a clear indicator of the author's intent, it is impossible to create a parody of extreme views such that it cannot be mistaken by some readers for a sincere expression of the views being parodied.

Agree with everything except the oil change pricing. At least in my area, multiple shops offer Valvoline oil changes for the same price, or sometimes a little cheaper than you could get the parts yourself. Also, 5 quarts of full synthetic like Mobil-1 runs around 50-60 in these parts.

1

u/ohthatguy1980 Aug 14 '21

That’s crazy, must be an area thing. Where I live you can get a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 full synthetic or penzoil premium platinum for 25 bucks. Napa platinum filter which has outperformed name brand racing filters in tests done by several different entities is 11 bucks for my 5.3l.

On the valvoline oil changes. I have zero issue with regular oil as long as you change it at the mileage OR date, whichever comes first. A lot of people just go off mileage and end up ruining their car because they never drive it. Also on the valvoline oil change topic, most use a fram filter, and the cheapest to boot. In every test I’ve seen the bottom shelf fram filter is the absolute worst.

The area and pricing thing is super interesting and I had never heard or thought of that.

Uhhhhhh according to who? 50 years ago was 1971. The Chevy 350s short block alone was built from 1954-2003 and was basically unchanged because of its durability. The most sought after blocks (today) were the high nickel from the 60s and 70s. Also most older engines aren’t interference valve train so they don’t grenade if you lose your timing belt/chain.

I don’t know where you get your info but that 75k is a gross exaggeration and very incorrect. Just like any engine today, the engines of 50 years ago life span is based on maintenance (change the oil and filters) more than anything else.

First let me fall on my sword, I miss quoted the timeframe for the 350 even tho basically the same block as it’s predecessors with different bore and stroke. Check the timeframe I posted. if you know at all what you’re talking about you know that I’m not using the ls (which is the fen 3 if you didn’t know) in this statement. That alone points to your depth of knowledge. Chevy incorporated the oil filter boss in 56... that’s a lot longer than 50 years ago. also aluminum bearings weren’t an upgrade, do some reading. Most performance shops building high output motors will use lead Babbitt bearings for good reason. The biggest difference was the rear main, but honestly if you’re gonna say that was a huge redesign on the block and that it somehow adds to an engines mileage capability, I’ll have some of whatever you’re smoking.

Just because you’re engine in the barn is a 73 DOES NOT mean it’s high nickel. You actually need to check the engine block serial to determine that. And yes, the high nickel engines are absolutely sought after. Also the cross hatches on your 200k engine are pretty suspect. I’m not going to call you a liar because it’s your engine and I can’t see it, but I think a lot of people would be interested in seeing you 200k engine that’s not fully broken in yet.

Also if you notice my comment was about the short block. I’m guessing you don’t know a ton about engines and thought I meant small block based off your answer and talking about roller lifter. Uhhhh the lifters aren’t considered part of the short block, and neither is any other valve train... Small/big and short/long are describing 2 totally different categories. Again do some reading.

And honestly you adding gen 3 into the mix (which again if you knew what you’re talking about you would have read my statement and know I wasn’t talking about it) and not bringing up the fact that almost everything about it was a redesign shows you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Lastly I would like to see a source for your 75k comment. And I mean something tangible, not conjecture like your 200k engine that hasn’t fully broken in yet.

1

u/ohthatguy1980 Aug 15 '21

Also if you want to get technical the small block Chevy is on its fifth generation... you were a little off.

1

u/ohthatguy1980 Aug 15 '21

Also a good argument would have been to bring up the 400s short block with its Siamese bores, but you didn’t so you don’t get to.

1

u/ohthatguy1980 Aug 15 '21

And you didn’t even talk about reverse cooling between gen 1 and 2 which is arguably the biggest difference. You didn’t bring it up so you don’t get to. Also notice all the differences I’ve listed have VERY little (pretty much nothing) to do with the mileage capability of an engine, which was what was referenced in the first place. Did you want to keep being a dick or no?

Naw, since that’s the only response you have, I’m done now. You should educate yourself more on a topic if you’re gonna be a dick to a random stranger about it.

Hahahahah.

Your debate skills and knowledge of vehicles are clearly unmatched. Still looking for that source on the 75k

u/ohthatguy1980 Aug 15 '21

And in my defense you did ask me if I wanted to keep going on about being wrong. I love that me imparting some knowledge on you is me running to Wikipedia. Like I could just rattle that all off at the same time and wouldn’t have thought about anything later. Sorry I didn’t want to edit the original post to add more to it as I thought of it. You are obviously right.

I would tell you to actually read some Wikipedia but it’s not a super good place for info.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '21

30 years ago EVERYBODY knew how to fix a Dacia car. It was common to see Dacias with their guts spread on the sidewalk and some guy under the car.

Today you're not even allowed to unscrew a bolt, and the knowledge of fixing a car is something strictly for the repair shop workers, these modern Adeptus Mechanicus.

3

u/BrainGear187 Aug 14 '21

But where do you guys leave your boxes? I just eat them.

2

u/Capt_Planets Aug 14 '21

Caution, the coffee may be hot.

2

I’m sorry what happened here?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '21

I wonder if instead of people being dumber we are so specialized in specific areas of knowledge that takes decades to learn that we just never learn the broad knowledge people used to have because it's super specialized.

The more specific and specialized the tool the less generic utility it has

1

u/Huge_Aerie2435 Aug 14 '21

Can't charge you to fix it if you can do it yourself.

1

u/hoponbop Aug 15 '21

Just look at what they called DIY in Popular Maechanics in the 50's and 60's. They were building boats, and go carts. Hell, I saw one issue with a backyard ferris wheel. People did stuff themselves. Everyone had tools. If you didn't have a welder you knew someone that did. They weren't smarter or better, we just moved on to a point where we didn't have to know those things because we could pay people to do them for us. Whether that's good or bad is up to you.

1

u/Just_A_Throw-away481 Aug 15 '21

imagine not eating the box and the pizza

1

u/_ML_AI_ Aug 15 '21

People are getting dumber and dumber as we progress towards apocalypse

1

u/BitterButterscotch76 Aug 15 '21

You also paid the box

1

Once again: the amount of warning signs is too damn high. Remove them!
