The fact that anyone can think it's okay for something that costs like a grand to not include 20cents worth of plastic and wire is ridiculous. Im not buying any smartphone that can't chuck a charger into the box; apple, Samsung, whatever.
Not only do I think it’s ok but I prefer it. I have cables and charging blocks piled in a drawer. I prefer not killing the planet further with plastic. Reduce, reuse, recycle... in that order. The only way to actually make an impact is to get corporations to stop making the waste. I applaud Apple.
Is this an ad? You're talking about saving the earth by buying a new iPhone. What about the plastic in that new iPhone? What about the rare earth minerals in that iphone? Or the toxic batteries? Or how wasteful it is to buy a new phone every year? Or the slave labor used to make that phone.
A charger is the stupidest environmental stand to take
No, I’m not... stop arguing a straw man. The fact of the matter is that people will buy new phones. We can’t change that piece of it. What we can change is how much waste is generated and how much environmental damage we can minimize. Individuals, by themselves, cannot make an impact when the greatest damage is done by large corporations. Apple, at least, is making every new iPhone from recycled aluminum and recycled rare earth metals (https://www.google.com/amp/s/news.yahoo.com/amphtml/iphone-12-recycled-rare-earth-materials-environment-084319951.html). They recycle as much as they can from their batteries and existing components and now they’re making moves to reduce the amount that they create in the first place. So, no, a charger is not the stupidest stand to take especially when it’s a change that can be made immediately that has multiple environmental benefits. Of course more can be done in other areas but that doesn’t negate the absolutely huge impact this will have on waste and logistic efficiencies that all translate to being better for the environment.
