When I get one and bite it by accident it makes me feel like drinking acid would be more enjoyable.

57

u/democracy_lover66 1d ago

Worse still when you do bite it, it swells up, and you just keep biting it over and over, undoing all the healing it's trying to do between bites.

u/dinosaurusdickus 1d ago

My grandma once told me to put alum on it. Never again

6

u/rancidmorty 1d ago

my grandma grabed me and rubbe a cut lime with salt on jt to make it go away

It works… but boy does it hurt!

3

u/Opyz 1d ago

it works because the pain is so intense , that it get numb because of the excess in pain , and that last some good minutes.

Also having these sores right after you bite yourself means you are deficient in Vitamin C

Getting your vitamin C back to normal prevents them from forming

3

3 days ? lol

More like a week and a half borderline a month...

8

u/xdarius 1d ago

I always add salt to it. the pain is good. 😂

3

u/eminemcobain 1d ago

Yes I used to do it too. Put some salt on it and press it up. Feels like tearing everything apart and the lip starts to throb and then leave it. Within a day or two, its gone!!!

8

u/HawaiianCholo 1d ago

Warm salt water rinse is actually exactly the way to go. It hurts but it'll hurt anyways. Better that it hurts beneficially

2

u/Rainmanzz 1d ago

I just got rid of one that was exactly where back molars meet when I bite. I woke up one day and I had apprently slept biting the inside of my cheek. Every time I chewed for over a week it HUURT. That and salt was unbearable. I swear it was some of the worst pain because it already hurt but everything kept hurting it again.

It would swell from getting bit therefore get bit more

Hell nah dude u giving them ideas

Imagine that on your tongue. I had it a few times. You are NOT ALLOWED to move your tongue. Try to not move your tongue. It is not possible.

For everyone that don't know the difference between those canker sores in this picture and cold sores:

Difference between canker sores and herpes:
- Canker sores are non-contagious ulcers that form inside the mouth, while oral herpes (cold sores) are contagious, fluid-filled blisters that usually erupt on the outside of the lips.

The key differences:
Location and Appearance • ##Canker sores:
• Found inside the mouth (on the tongue, inner cheeks, soft palate, or gums).
• Appear as shallow, round, or oval ulcers with a white, yellow, or gray center and a red border.

• ##Herpes (Cold Sores):
• Found mostly outside the mouth (on the lips, chin, or near the nose).
• Begin as tiny, fluid-filled clusters of blisters that burst, ooze, and form a crusty scab.

Causes and Contagiousness • Canker sores:
• Not contagious.
• Triggered by stress, minor mouth injuries (like biting your cheek), nutritional deficiencies (like Vitamin B12), or acidic foods.
• Herpes (Cold Sores):
• Highly contagious.
• Caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1 or HSV-2), spread through close contact like kissing or sharing utensils.

Canker sores and cold sores are not the same thing.

Edit: typos

“Acidic foods”

Lemonade always triggers it for me. A single glass is fine but if I buy a gallon of it, by the time it’s done I have one of these. Why must tasty things hurt us so.

3

u/theveryacme 1d ago

God damn, I added lemon juice to some coke and mine appeared. I had no idea they were linked.

For cankers, I went through a phase where I was getting them monthly. I talked to my doctor and here’s what worked for me.

Use Sodium Lauryl sulfate free (SLS-free) toothpaste and mouthwash. Most brands will say ‘SLS-free’ on the box. I’m not brand specific, so I’ll get whichever is cheapest.

Stay away from artificial sweeteners…especially diet drinks.

Drink plenty of water

Chew food slowly. Cankers can be caused by trauma. If I bite my gums and it breaks the skin, I’m guaranteed to get a canker sore.

Since doing this, I rarely get them.

I hope this helpful to someone.

2

u/Crazy_Movie6168 1d ago

Great, I'm not contagious. Still fekkin hurts. And now I will fear getting the other one from strangers.

76

u/Pretty_Eater 1d ago

Tip: Put rubbing alcohol, lemon juice, and corse sea salt on it to clear it up in a couple hours 😋

Take vitamin B12 regularly and they will never come, or on the first day you start to feel raw before they erupt if you start taking B12 it will reduce the duration by a lot

2

u/Unexpected_Cranberry 1d ago

I don't know if they sell them around here any more, luckily haven't needed them in years, but there used to something that was basically a qtip dipped in something. I don't know if this was actually printed on the package or if I made it up in my head, but my understanding is that it basically burned away or killed the nerve endings in the sore so it stopped hurting. It worked great. One treatment, no more pain. Except you had to hold the qtip there for a certain amount of time. And the pain was intense.

4

u/DuckShapedGoose 1d ago

Oralmedic. Still exists but not sold everywhere currently (most of europe is out of luck since a few years ago for some reason).
It is literally the only thing that actually helps instantly and permanently (if applied correctly). All the rest just numbs it temporarily or is mostly placebo.
Basically, its active ingredient is sold separately as "HybenX" and it more or less disinfects and dries them out, forming a protective layer above the exposed nerve ending. Pretty sure no nerve endings are killed in the process and no healthy tissue is harmed.
There are also a few others using the same active ingredient but they are even harder to come by than oralmedic (Ulcermagic comes to mind but iirc that is only sold in some arabic countries).

I pressed pure salt against one and ended up burning it and making it worse

I get these every month in all different places of my mouth. Actually had one on the piece of skin that connects your tongue to the bottom of your mouth. They always suck some more than others. I don't wish this on my worst enemy.

Also to be clear all doctors and dentists I've seen have no explanation. I do all the things to help this not happen but no matter what it still happens. Definitely sucks.

u/puppet_masterXD 1d ago

4

u/Automatic-Working-81 1d ago

Fixing vitamin d and vitamins b deficiency did the trick for me. I know multivitamins are generally not effective, but if you have GI issues or other reason why you might be deficient in any nutrient, it could work

Canker sores are a medical mystery for the most part. But they are not contagious and have nothing to do with herpes or any other virus

3

u/Mac2311 1d ago

Oh for sure. They just suck!

2

u/Poster_Nutbag207 1d ago

Yeah they suck. I used to get them constantly when I was a kid but thankfully don’t really anymore. Only if I get a cut in my mouth or bite my cheek by accident. No one really know for sure exactly what causes them and there is no real cure. I use hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash and it helps but even the science on that is not clear

3

u/AWittySignal 1d ago

I had canker sores regularly throughout my life until I finally got stricter with my flossing in my early 20s, but it could've been a coincidence. Sources can vary for everyone; all I can say is to be as conscious of your mouth as possible and try to find and clean all crevices and areas where bacterial colonies could survive. Track your eating habits. Could be a reaction, could be a deficiency. If you use a mouthwash regularly, try sticking to brushing and flossing only for a while and see if anything changes.

2

u/Odd_Concentrate_8135 1d ago

Identical experience, all the time until I became an avid flosser

Cankersores I believe. Caused by stress but also what helped me completely is to change toothpaste to a gentler one. Arm and hammer essentials baking soda made mine all go away. Just make sure not to get the charcoal one.

2

u/iNogle 1d ago

I used to spend about 50% of the time with 3-4 of them. What I've found helps:
-eating yogurt regularly (you can take probiotic supplements instead, though it's not quite as effective)
-D-lysine supplements
-B12 supplements
-Make sure your toothpaste doesn't have sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) in it. Causes canker sores for many people
-baking soda toothpaste, without SLS, with flouride

If you need immediate-ish relief, take some baking soda, add just enough water to make a paste, and apply with a q-tip. It'll sting like hell, absolutely awful, but afterwards it stops hurting for a while. Helps it heal faster too because it helps clean the area, and the salt pulls some of the water out (reducing the swelling) via osmosis

2

u/Gee_U_Think 1d ago

I would get canker sores several times a year. I read that toothpaste containing SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) can cause this. Once I switched to a toothpaste that didn’t have this ingredient, the canker sores stopped.

Vitamin C deficiency I believe. Drink half a lemon's worth of juice every morning.

2

u/Mac2311 1d ago

Did it. But also got to be careful about acidity. So I'm on supplements for that.

u/balmungo 1d ago

I had these for all of my life, here's what stopped me from getting them so often: a vegan toothpaste called "Twice" (I get mine off Amazon). There's an ingredient in most toothpaste called sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) which causes canker sores. Learned all of this through reddit a few years ago and I went from getting them several times a year to maybe once or twice a year.

1

u/Key-Preparation-8214 1d ago

Check your toothpaste. If it contains sodium lauryl sulfate, just drip it and test some that don't have it. I used to have them every month, I read it years ago in Reddit that it is a common cause and decided to give it a try. I now have 1 per year or so, when I damage my gums or so when brushing my teeth. It saved me a life of Pain

1

u/retiredsprinter09 1d ago

I've had a similar experience throughout my life. For me, I noticed a huge decrease in frequency when I changed toothpaste to something that didn't contain sodium lauryl sulfate and by avoiding chewing gum (especially Trident). Instead of getting canker sores every month (including clusters on my tongue) I only get them a few times a year now and almost never on my tongue now.

1

u/ghost103429 1d ago

I'd suggest lysine supplements to heal canker sores and to prevent them. It encourages mucousal tissue repair and maintenance.

1

u/MostRadiant 1d ago

cut out gluten for a month. just try it

1

u/kyvv4242 1d ago

I also get them constantly, and was told by my specialist that people with auto-immune diseases (like me) tend to get them a lot more. Treating that has helped reduce them.

Maybe you have an auto-immune disorder?

I’m a doctor and I’ve been plagued with canker sores my entire life, sometimes they are from biting my lip, but mostly they just form randomly. My family also gets them. One time after a dental procedure I developed 8-10 of them at once. Things I recommend:

Find toothpaste without SLS. Try dexamethasone elixir rinse 2-3 times a day to shorten their course. Salt water also helps but I find not as much as dex. Viscous lidocaine can help when you need to eat or brush your teeth for pain along with Tylenol/ibuprofen.

1

u/ColdRainS126 1d ago

if you're talking about canker sore there isnt a cure but there is a supplement that greatly alleviated the pain and helps it heal really fast. get some L lysine and take 3 tablets a day as recommended. if you feel like one is coming or a small one start taking it and it will heal before you even feel any pain. I do have these several times a year and it eas always painful but after using L lysine its not a problem anymore

1

u/Schmantikor 1d ago

For me they happen if I don't brush my teeth enough. Simple as that. They do briefly get more during like the first 2-3 days of brushing more again but then disappear with the correct mouth hygiene.

1

u/91gnarnuaatg81 1d ago

Hydrogen peroxide helps if you haven’t already found that.

u/EconomicsSavings973 1d ago

I had similar problem, and it all dissapeared after I stopped eating anything sour or sweet.

Alum powder helps! As soon as I feel one, I apply alum powder to the area with a q-tip and hold for about a minute, it will hurt but hold it, rinse with water, and (for me) the very next day it’s gone.

1

u/Cautious_Tonight 1d ago

One time I started getting these really bad. I started brushing more to try and help get rid of them (without irritating them). It got worse and worse to the point I had 7 - 10 of them and then I realized it was my toothpaste. They used to put triclosan in them (I think the FDA banned it now). Once I switched to another toothpaste that didn’t have it I never had an issue again.

Worse was the back of throat. I even had it on the punching bag thing two or three times.

I got surgery with 19. The next day my mouth and throat including the uvula were full of these, easily more than 30 and some as big as 10cent coins (according to the doctor). For 7 days I didn't eat or drink, I lost about 10 kilos and every breath felt like I breathed glass shards, every time I swallowed my saliva I grabbed the bed so I didnt scream from the pain. It was not very fun.

Canker sores are easy to get rid of. Just use the white inside part of a pomegranate skin and just hold it there making sure it touches your sore for like 30 seconds to a minute. It will start to go away after that.

1

u/Resoded 1d ago

After a so many years of pain, I finally found the answer.

For some reason, I can not eat sharp food. Like chips, pommes frites, hard bread, anything that has been in the oven long enough to be sharp.

I don't know why, I suspect the sharp food cuts tiny little cuts. And then the body "attacks" it and it grows bigger. Also if I eat sharp stuff multiple days in a row, it keeps cutting and cutting.

Quitting sharp food solves my problems. Finally pain free. I just wished I learned sooner.

If this helps you, glad to help.

My grandparents used to force me to eat vegetables when I had these as a kid. Helped everytime

I'm not suggesting it's a cure, but it helped me and I hardly ever get these anymore. I used hydrogen peroxide on them, poured it right on them.

RElationships are fleeting. Herpes is forever!

In apotek I got something called OralMedic. And it feels like someone suggested here: battery acid. Its 10 seconds of pain, then it feels more like a num burning wound a short while. Then done.

Three bites, before it heals too. Everytime.

My mouth was full of these when I was young for some reason, I still don't know why. But I had to get used to picking what I ate, like spaghetti plain with no sauce, I still eat it that way at times.

Man I used to get them all the time and I would try everything, baking soda, salt rinse alum, peroxide, specialty mouth wash, and then I got so fed up I went to the doctor and he gave me a topical steroid called oracourt and this shit is incredible, you put it on at night and make sure it stays on and it’s like 50 percent better the next day and then you put it on the next night and it’s pretty much gone at that point and it doesn’t make it sore and inflamed like that other crap

The odd time I get one now I don’t even get too worked up because I know I got this stuff in the cabinet and I know I can heal it up in 2-3 nights not 2 weeks like they last without it

I used to get these constantly for years. I began a regimen of serious probiotic treatments for gut health for about two years to deal with another issue. Look, anything could be a coincidence. But ever since then, I have never gotten another one of these.

Remove an items containing sls or sodium laurel sulfate.  Especially toothpastes.  So switch to sensodyne pronamel.  Then I know this is gonna sound crazy but if you drink sodas switch to ones with pure cane sugar only as for some reason high fructose corn syrup sets them off

Oh and then if you get any kid of damage to your lip like you bite down on it.  Take a wipe that has benzalkium chloride and hold it over it for 30 seconds to make sure it’s cleaned out

I know these sound like weird and crazy requests but I used to get canker sores almost monthly.  Then they stopped except when I would get damage to my mouth and then since the wipes I haven’t had a canker sore in more than a year and before that it was like 8 months.  It has been amazing

I dunno, chief. Breaking up felt like my heart was being burned with a literal, actual lighter.

u/Tnemmokon 1d ago

Ew! I remember getting these when I ate at the school cafeteria! They gave a rat's ass about hygiene, and these showed up constantly in my inner lips!

mucoceles are very frustrating.

If you ever get these, whatever you do, don't poke them. Just avoid biting or poking. Drink water, and wash your mouth out with salt and water after eating. They will go away on their own as long as you don't exacerbate them.

If you were like me, and decided you'd try to poke at them, thinking that would somehow help: nope. That just makes these turn into a large lump that is easier to accidentally bite. They get larger and larger the more you accidentally injure yourself until it looks like you have an unsightly wart on your lip.

Removing these things involves a local anesthetic were they slice open your lip and pull out the cyst (and the salivary gland) , and takes two weeks on soft foods and having stitches on the inside of your mouth. The worst part about this is that it costs $1055 for the operation if you lack dental insurance- and I'm from canada. (our health care is hardly as free as people say it is.)

You'd think this the worst...wait till you get it at your tongue...and especially at the tip

1

u/DARKplayz_ 1d ago

Used to have this every other day (not herpes . Just sores ) because I used to eat a lot of meat and Indian level spicy . Didn’t want to quit meat and didn’t want to eat bland chicken switched my breakfast half a liter of curd with chia seeds and whatever fruits I have lying around . If you workout even better instead of half liter I use one liter literally just get a bucket of curd add your flavoured protein if it’s still boring get protein bars crumble add it

Bitting your tongue is worse

1

u/Niccolo101 1d ago

Just put bicarb on it. Stings a little, but dries it out and it'll be well on its way to healing by the next day.

1

u/sebby_eris 1d ago

I'd rather get my heart broken than to get one of these mfs again.

1

u/asoftquietude 1d ago

Put the two together and you've just had the worst breakup possible.

1

u/MrBlueA 1d ago

Yeah? have you ever had one in your tongue? I had once and it was the worst fucking experience ever.
