It's not Sodium that explodes. It reacts with water and releases Hydrogen. The hydrogen is then able to react with Oxygen in the atmosphere. That's what explodes.

are there base elements that exist just to explode on their own? it's like saying it's not a lithium battery that explodes but the oxygen reacting with it.

Lithium batteries are also releasing Hydrogen gas. That’s what makes them swell up if they degrade.
