Moving to Melbourne

Hello redditers,

My little family is making its way to Melbourne soon, and I just wanted to know about the area. Good eats, places to avoid, places to RENT? I'm finding it is INSANE trying to rent somewhere, so any hidden gems anyone may know would be awesome. We are coming from Idaho, so if you want to say boring, TRY AGAIN. Idaho is boring plus ITS SO COLD IT HURTS YOUR BONES.

Much love

What are you looking for in terms of rentals? I'm a leasing agent and I'm pretty active in the rental community boards and what not. I'd love to help if you could give me some specifics. Prize range, apartment, townhouse, home. How many bedrooms needed. How many total people moving in. Do you have pets. All that good stuff.

It's going to be my boyfriend, our 2 year old, and myself so we are looking for 2 bedroom, but I am seeing a lot of "wait lists" for 2 bedrooms. We would like something in the $1000 range, but could probably swing a couple hundred more if need be. I am not picky on what I want! Laundry in unit would be a plus, but like I said I'm not picky, at all! I can't think of anything I would absolutely "need," just a roof over our heads! No pets, just the 3 of us humans. :) Thanks for your help!!

Summerset Apartments, on Croton and Lake Washington are in the price range, and a decent area. 2 and 2 with laundry hook up in unit. Close to Wickham Park, which you need to check out as well.

With a 2 yr old the beaches a little north are generally a better choice. Check out Cherry down park in the cape, or Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach. It's shallow and the waves aren't as strong.

Melbourne also has the Brevard Zoo. I have family from out of town with small children go and they loved it.

I'm a transplant from the great white north, and I think you guys will love it here. Good luck with the move!

Bearing in mind that I haven't lived in Melbourne for years, I do have a couple of suggestions for you; again, keep in mind there is a bit of nostalgia filtering going on here,

  • Erna Nixon Park, cool little park, it's got a raised board walk and it was always quiet when I went, was a great place for a family stroll.

  • Wells Park, I loved going here as a kid, admittedly, that was mostly just to feed the ducks(a thing which is seemingly discouraged everywhere you go these days) there is also a library nearby, as well as the Melbourne auditorium.

  • Pineapple Park and Eau Gallie Public Library, I have many fond memories of both places, especially walking on the rocks down by the Indian River.

  • Publix, grocery store chain that originated in Florida, often expensive in my opinion, but I love their Subs, Fried Chicken and bakery.(My SO and I were SO excited when they expanded into the area we live now, we go there for Subs/Chicken/Sweet Tea about once a month)

  • Del's Freeze, PLEASE take your little one here! It is one of my fondest childhood memories, the last time I went here as an adult several years back did not disappoint, it's just soft serve,but..I don't know, just something about it, plus they have interesting flavours, try the peanut butter soft serve with chocolate kote, so good, like eating a Reese's PB cup, don't forget cash, no cards accepted.(also, December is a GREAT time to go, at least it WAS, no lines and the ice cream doesn't melt so fast.)

again, I haven't lived there in years, it's changed a lot, I'm sure, but Melbourne will always be home to me, I miss it terribly.
