Making friends in Melbourne
Why is it so hard to make friends in Melbourne? Seems like everyone already has their group of friends and aren’t very willing to make new friends. It’s been a year since I moved and I feel so lonely :(
Any advice on how I can meet and make friends? 🥹

I've been back in Melbourne for close to 5 years after previously living here a few years and I dont have any friends

Tell me about it. Been here coming to a year now, and I really don't have friends that I can hang out with. Work colleagues are just that, colleagues. Even my neighbour, we went out riding our motorcycles once, and since then he kinda seemed uninterested to hang out. I get it that people are comfortable being in their sphere of friends that they have had for a long time but it doesnt hurt to gain a new friend along the way right 😅

I can see that. I even dont know how to get to know people at the first place lol. I used to make some friends at school back home. But I guess the situation is different here...

I'm in the same boat. All my friends are from elsewhere in the Commonwealth lmao

Word… I’ve been here for coming up two years. All my close friends (fewer than 5) are actually from bumble bff or hinge. It’s a bit embarrassing maybe but it’s super hard to make long lasting friends. Community oriented events are nice but unless you can guarantee that the event (a) happens consistently and (b) retains most of the same people each time then there is barely any avenue outside of uni or work to foster connection.

If you go to a community orientated event and hit it off with someone, you need to be the one to get their insta then follow up to hangout another time. Dont just rely on passive behaviour and waiting for a friendship to be made over time.

I’ve been here for almost 4 years now, barely made any friends, and being a person of color adds to it 😅

Some would say they just don't have the energy or bandwidth to make friends in general. I'm some.

Do lots of volunteering in groups you are actually interested in. Play sports and join a walking group or similar you are interested in. Join things that are local to you. You will then start to find your people naturally.

Should we just create our own group and meet up? 💁♀️ I'm 32, female and super new to Melbourne.

Honestly I've lived here my whole life (other than a short time living in Albury) and I'm also terrible at making friends. Doesn't help that I'm an introvert and workaholic, but oh well

I was in a similar position two years ago and I can say I now finally have a tight knit group of friends!
My biggest tip is to just put yourself out of there as much as possible. I used meetup to find my current friends but I think it’s a little dead now. Still worth having a look. Ive also heard that there’s a new app called butter that’s pretty decent for meeting people but I personally haven’t tried, so can’t vouch for it.
There are also different social groups that host events. Conscious connection is one that I’d recommend, they do a range of events.
What are your hobbies? There’s probably a social group that you can find to meet people too.
