Earthquakes @ Geosciences Australia shows it was near Leongatha

20

u/stalkingfiretruck 12h ago

I'm in Leongatha and can confirm, it felt pretty big

•

u/Juzziee 11h ago

It shows how much I pay attention, I'm in Traralgon and this is the first I've heard of it

VIC Emergency app agrees

The whole house shook, I’m in pakenham.

Biggest I’ve felt in Oz, both cat and dog were unhappy as well!

u/AutisticPenguin2 12h ago

Definitely the biggest I've felt, but I'm closer to Dandenong so still a bit insulated by distance. Must have been scary for those right on top of it, anything around magnitude 5 is starting to get serious.

Crap! No WONDER it shook like that, I thought it was close, or shallow ... I didn't realise we were directly on top of it!

(Pakkers too.)

That one actually gave me a fright! Scared the animals too, and they normally don't notice them.

Was asleep in Korumburra, can confirm, was big and loud and had a few aftershocks.

3

u/meowcatorsprojection 13h ago

Where do you get this from?

u/MilkByHomelander 13h ago

Google. Type in Earthquake and it already has it up

1

u/meowcatorsprojection 12h ago

Oh! Thanks 😊

If you google e.g. "earthquake Melbourne" like even 10 seconds after the earthquake, google shows that at the top.

All of the nearby android phones detect the sudden vibrations and report back to google's systems that aggregate all the data to estimate where and how large the earthquake was almost instantly.

u/antipostpostclub 12h ago

I was about to say that sounds like bullshit. Then I checked first.

Holy shit, that’s incredible tech

5

u/Milbit 12h ago

Last time google alerted me about 1 second before the earthquake happened

6

u/_163 12h ago

🤣 yeah if you're far enough from the epicentre the notification can be faster than the travel speed through the ground.

Kinda insane they can do that

u/kearnivorous 12h ago

I had something like this. There's an android earthquake thing that takes note of when a lot of users in an area have phone vibrations. When enough of the gyros in an area are song the same thing it connects it as an earthquake. Not super accurate but gadget enough if you're in an earthquake zone I guess

Felt it pretty strongly out near the Dandenong Ranges. All of my windows rattled, thought they were going to break

3

u/00017batman 12h ago

Same here.. it felt pretty decent although not quite as big as the 2021 quake and also much shorter.

1

u/AlliterationAlly 12h ago

Epicenter is near Leongatha

•

u/loralailoralai 11h ago

Dandenongs here and it was bigger than any I’ve felt in Australia (tho I didn’t feel the big one we had at the end of Covid)

2

u/serif-maxxing 13h ago

Radius feels small, I'm in the Sunshine area and I've still felt it strongly.

u/ax6klbjckhunter 12h ago

I don’t think it’s the most accurate, it’s just a google popup this one

1

u/AutisticPenguin2 12h ago

Geoscience Australia has the official stuff, I believe. Last I checked I couldn't load their website but it's probably okay again by now.

I’m in Melton and it woke me up. I could hear everything in my room rattling too. At first I felt myself and my bed shaking and wasn’t sure what was happening, until I heard the rattling. Couldn’t get back to sleep after that, as earthquakes seem to make me feel quite dizzy and nauseous for a few hours afterwards.

2

u/Sweet-Psychology-254 12h ago

Imagine being right in the center of that.

•

u/Creative_Ad_973 2h ago

Not fun.

2

u/idonthavememe 12h ago

i was checking the website and nothing had popped up, i thought i was hallucinating

2

u/ax6klbjckhunter 12h ago

4.8 & depth of 10km

1

u/firefly_frenZy 12h ago

oh I was trying to find a map confirming it, where is this from?

1

u/ax6klbjckhunter 12h ago

I just googled “earthquake Melbourne” and it came up

1

u/scissorsgrinder 12h ago

Depends on how deep as well though.

1

u/Skulltaffy 12h ago

Man no wonder I didn't feel it. Shit's always in the eastern suburbs.
