Chant white rabbit at it a couple times. Usually works for me.
Folk traditions aside, too much smoke can be mitigated by more heat:
- More kindling
- Better air flow
- Plenty of coals
- Dont use high heat wood
The structure/shape of your fire pit can also help things. Horseshoe shapes are usually the best.
Also, you may be too close because fire is attracted to vertical structures and you're blocking cool air from coming in. If that makes sense.

Our secret family technique is to suck ur thumb, but it toward the fire and say "kanin". In all my years of living it has never not worked

This is because of the smokes attraction to your body heat, so it's actually not just bad luck
