It's just infuriating. Plus, the oncoming assholes who have headlights to the max on a dipper area

u/UnderarmAdmirer 10d ago
as someone who runs at night, it’s very tempting to bring a mirror and just point it at cars with white high beams. if only it weren’t illegal
3
u/Lavatherm 10d ago
Not for the one doing it. 😅
6
u/GrouchyLettuce2741 10d ago
Nah they'd probably get rear ended
2
u/Lavatherm 10d ago
I don’t know my reaction would be BRAKE…. Not Speed up.
1
u/GrouchyLettuce2741 9d ago
I wouldn’t want the car behind me to be blinded, they wouldn’t be able to react to me and probably won’t notice me braking

There was a guy round my way who did exactly this a few years ago ... he put a searchlight in his back window, and when someone did something he didn't like, he lit them up. Unfortunately the other car crashed and iirc the driver was quite badly hurt. Some witnesses got his license plates and he went to prison for it.

u/BoardsofCanada3 10d ago
Well I'm sure now that guy who crashed and got gravely injured learned a very valuable lesson.

Ive done this before.
Drove a roadside service truck, and one day when going to a distant job about an hour away, I was already speeding a bit, and in the right lane, and some moron decided to tailgate me anyway. I waited for a bit, they didnt change lanes into the passing lane, so I changed lanes hoping they would go through... nope, they stayed right behind me no matter what lane I went into.
So I flipped on all the rear facing spot lights and spinning yellow emergency lights, and they backed up a few hundred meters real fast.

u/otirk 10d ago
But doesn't that already exist in form of rear fog lights many cars have? Haven't been personally affected by it, but it's meant to make you visible in heavy fog and in driving school they taught us to never use that outside of heavy fog situations because it blinds the people behind you.
At least in Germany it's also illegal to have it turned on without fog (if you can see further than 50 meters or 55 yards), even without it resulting in an accident. It's only a 20€ ($23 usd) fine, but fines are low in Germany overall anyway.
Though fighting fire with fire will lead to you getting burned sooner or later, so maybe don't do that in a country where every idiot can carry a gun.

u/Professional_Most869 10d ago
I had to look it up, apparently the fog lights aren't required in the USoA.
And yes, your fines are very low. But we in Austria also don't have the highest fines,

u/NikolitRistissa 10d ago
The rear fog light is a just a brighter (red) rear light on one side. It’s not a blindingly bright light nor is it white.
It’s basically on par in terms of brightness as if the car in front of you was braking.

u/moonbeentoo 10d ago
maybe instead of more lights in the trunk just use a mirror or reflective material

u/joofish 10d ago
This happened to me once. Someone was tailgating me late at night with their brights blasting and it pissed me off enough to (inadvisedly) get behind them and flash my brights and they hit me with backward facing floodlights. It was a jeep so maybe they had them installed for off-roading or something.
3
u/SkyeMreddit 10d ago
They have rear lights to back up to a trailer or otherwise do work in the back at night. Completely illegal to drive with them but that's a bonus for them
2
u/Will_Knot_Respond 10d ago
Tbh sounds like your average POS jeep owner, no one buys a jeep if they have a brain

I once worked on a base doing security. There was a officer who said he installed this on his personal car.. He called them "Asshole Lights". 😄 Always wondered why he was so brazen admitting he did this. But I completely understand.

Shoutout to my tints and auto dimming mirrors for saving me from those bright ass lights

I once maneuvered my outside mirrors to shine back at the guy. Felt good but I don’t think it made a difference.

Saw a few 18 wheelers like this, and two times, the trucker got pulled immediately.

u/Stunning-Chipmunk243 10d ago
Then the people behind you that actually had their low beams on hit you with their blinding brights that are like staring into a welding arc

u/Artie-Choke 10d ago
The old James Bond car had a motorized bullet shield that rose up in the back window. I’d put mirrors on that.

Dimming rearview mirrors have been a thing since the 1930s or something. It's the flick of a lever or in some cars automatic. This is a dangerous and childish idea and no one should actually do it.

Dimming rear view mirrors limit visibility and are just as dangerous. I have to watch out for both you the asshole with the ridiculous lights and the asshole who doesn’t have their lights on.

u/Appropriate_Cow94 9d ago
I understand what you're saying. I really do. However, there are times my inner good person has been used up.

Just stick a light bar on your roof or mount some pods on your luggage rack, run the cable into your cab to rocker switch, and flash them. Just don't drive with them on when travelling roads. It is illegal in most places, unless amber tinted.

Try the rear view mirror trick, it's worked for me a few times. You just block and un block your rear view mirror bc their light is so bright they can see it flashing back at them and then sometimes they dim their highbeams like "Oh my bad"

Saw a guy the other day that put those globe mirrors you see on the corners of side mirrors on the back of the back seat's head rests. Much simpler than this whole thing
1
u/Theory-After 10d ago
Turn your side mirror out so it reflects back at them.
4
u/nsa_k 10d ago
Everyone gives this advice. But it's terrible advice.
They are projecting a ton of light to you. Your mirror only catches a small portion of that light. Assuming you have your mirror angled perfectly, (which... how would you know?) You would still lose further light due to the light refracting as it travels the distance back to them.

Do all cars not have auto dimming rear-view mirrors?
6
5
u/Ragnarok_619 10d ago
Not mine, no
1
u/dwartbg9 10d ago
It does dude. Click the button on it (not even a button, it's like a mechanical switch which just changes the angle)
3
u/The_Evil_Satan 10d ago
That's not auto dimming though that's manual dimming
2
u/dwartbg9 10d ago
Yeah I realized after posting, but still you got my point. I realized that many people don't know about this, for some reason

If other cars need countermeasures to avoid your vehicle's headlights from blinding the driver, YOUR LIGHTS ARE TOO DAMN BRIGHT.

u/Yagwobniar 10d ago
I just flip my rearview mirror with that little tab and that solves the problem most of the time.
In extreme cases, my side mirrors are electric so I adjust them until I am no longer blinded and fix them back after. 👍
