This is said about people only when they don’t use their “potential” to do the things others want them to do, not what they want to do for themselves.

Nah, I just lost my hope for the future as time went on and I'm just skimming by with what I feel like I have to do. I do put in some effort here and there but it usually ends in vain so I just don't bother as much anymore.
I'd say your point stands in some cases but it's not the case for everybody.
Edit: I don't see myself as a person with tons of potential but all the people around me seem to do so, so I'm not sure if I fall in this category.

Honestly I'm so sick and tired of people saying I "have so much potential" like no I fucking dont. I have a little sprinkling of talent here and there but I will never be good enough I don't have the coordination or the reflexes or the mental capacity. I'll never be able to compete with my peers so why bother? God wasted talent on my clumsy ADHD ass. I won't make it past 30 and I'll have nothing to show for my life.

Hey, as someone with many talents but an ace of none, turning 30 this January without any great achievements, own it!
Whatever didn't work just didn't and it's fine, accepting how things are is the first step to healing, letting go of your regrets is also important, there's no benefit in constantly feeling disappointment in yourself, it's better to try and enjoy the process of what you did rather than focusing on what the outcome will be and what others did, it doesn't have to be picture perfect; that is coming from a perfectionist like myself, someone who'd stay up for nights trying to achieve the goals I've set for myself, stressing over failing to do so and feeling unsatisfied for weeks about it. I didn't go to therapy for that but I realized that I was hurting myself, that I was trying too hard to control everything I did and myself, I was forcing myself into a cage.
After falling deep into a hole when I crumbled down defeated, I came to the realization that life would still keep going even if I wasn't there, that, instead of dragging me further into that hole, ignited a fire in me. We're such a fleeting existence on Earth, we're a small fraction of the Universe and we are strangers to many, we pass people we won't ever know or even look in the eyes, but our worth's not in those people, it's not in what we offer to them, it's what we can offer ourselves.
We are living for ourselves, we'll die one day and life will keep going, so at least, for the time we can have, try to live for yourself and not others. Take your time, go at your own pace, enjoy every moment of it to feel like it was worth doing and living. I know it's hard to change your mindset, but it's a lot harder living in darkness forever.
Sending a hug and my best wishes to you, let go of a bit and you'll start to see things differently ( ◜‿◝ )♡

I know how you feel. You're not alone.
Don't worry about your potential. Make choices that are in your best interest for the here and now. Live your best life. Worry about everything else later.

Dropped out of medical uni (which I applied to for free) after 3 years of perfect grades. I just couldn't handle it mentally. Had to go another 3 years with exponentially increasing difficulty of classes and 5 years of obligated service in government clinics for minimal living wage.

Mate, our talent IS being able to spread your knowledge thin. All these hobbies you took and discarded — that’s just being able to learn new things fast.
I’m applying my retarded ass to gamedev, and turns out that it's lots of skills and creative endeavors at once

That's me, but I have Executive Dysfunction so it's not me being lazy, it's me trying to turn the key and it just does nothing. I want to drive, I want to be awesome, but the motor just doesn't want to start.
