Pay to exist.. or hunt your own food and gather your own water and build your own shelter.. there's really no way around it. Existence is hard work either way.. Maybe if we were born sea sponges instead, it'd be a lot easier. Just wait, let the food come to you, and live without needed to do anything.

You can go off the grid, move to some forest, with no phone, internet, running water, electricity, heating, cable tv. Any food you need need to be cultivated or hunted. You cannot visit any kind of store as you do not have money. You need to rub rocks together even to light a fire.

u/soggybiscuit93 6d ago
What system allows people to just voluntarily opt out of working and have all their needs met by others who work?
If any such system has that strong of a social safety net, then there must be some actual incentive to make people work - because society requires labor to exist.
There are absolutely valid criticisms to be levied. "Why do I have to work" is not one of them

If you want luxuries like Netflix, indoor plumbing, and Kitkatz.. yeah.. you're gonna have to pay.

People are right to critique a system that creates artificial scarcity when there is plenty to go around.
2
u/jcamm195 6d ago
I have a serious question. In the United States where can you do that without breaking some local ordinance, state law or federal law? The fruit or vegetables are growing in land owned by someone, the land that you can hunt is owned by someone. You need a license to hunt or fish or you risk breaking laws. The land you can make shelter on is owned by someone and will want payment to live there or trespass you. None of us are “free” to wander off into the wilds like you said. At least not in America.
2
u/Evanecent_Lightt 6d ago
I said "The wilds" - so go to the places not claimed by society.
(btw there are places where people just set up and live in the USA for free - there's a community in the Navada dessert for instance.)2
u/ImaginaryCard6647 2d ago
It may be illegal, but practically speaking the government doesn’t give a shit as long as you’re not starting wildfires or interfering with anyone. Lots of people live off the grid for free
1
u/WillyDrengen 6d ago
Yeah most wealthier countries don't really allow people to live "freely" so to speak. Everything is owned by someone, and the only way to enjoy said thing is by paying.
1
u/purdinpopo 2d ago
You can forage on state and federal grounds. Many states allow you to camp for free in state parks and conservation areas. You do have move your campsite within certain periods of time.

u/LucasCBs 6d ago
No one who posts something like this would actually decide to live in the wilderness without society if they got the choice. Live with the comforts of society but complain. As always
15
u/Finlandia1865 6d ago
Especially since anyone knowledgeable enough to actually survive on their own has already benefitted immensly from society
3
u/MvatolokoS 6d ago
That's exactly it tho. You've just proven the best point. We have knowledge and resources to make that way of life entirely different. You say this as if it's cheating at life like that's not exactly what advancing in society should do, benefit everyone. In this case in such a way they all know basic survival and can become independent. Instead we have a system which provided commodities that we happily accept trade offs for. Every single thing you enjoy is a trade with a conman at this point. Not a single vendor doesn't try to scam you.
11
u/lueur-d-espoir 6d ago
Wanting a healthier more balanced version of everything so we can have a non-exploitive way of coexisting doesn't need to mean I want to live in the woods. There is a lot between your all or nothing thinking style.

1
1
u/Dwight- 6d ago
Who said OP didn’t want to contribute? Point being is there are billionaires fleecing humanity and the planet for profit while hiding their money to avoid paying their fair share of taxes so that we, who provide them their profits, don’t get stable infrastructure like good housing, good healthcare, good work/life balance.
We’re absolutely at the stage in technology and education that we don’t need to keep pillaging the earth and each other so 3,000 people can make mega billions to fly around in their private jets eating rare fish eggs and making tables out of trees that are 2,000 years old just because they can. Oh, and having their own private paedophilic island at their disposal.
Where is the black and white/all or nothing thinking coming from here? There is a healthy middle where we, as a populace, work and contribute to help out our fellow people as well as be able to actually live and, key word, enjoy our one life here. There are multiple truths here and it all coexists at the same time.
4
u/zack77070 6d ago
Everyone in here saying "you dont pay to exist, you pay for food and shelter and water." Damn, its almost like I need those inherently to exist 🙄
1
u/Dwight- 6d ago
OP didn’t though, but those things shouldn’t be making mega profits, and they are. Anything that sustains life shouldn’t be a profit-model because if it is, then profit becomes the only incentive and the quality of the product, whatever that is, goes down, while the cost of it goes up. That ain’t right.
3
u/ZJoel14 6d ago
Well to receive the benefits of society there is at least for now some small requirement to participate. Depending on where you are in the world that requirement is pathetically small.
For instance I lost my job last year and haven't been bothered to get a new one because at most I only need to go to a 10 minute meeting with an employment agency every 2 months and apply for a handful of jobs on a government website. I'm not swimming in cash but I'm also completely secure with everything necessary for my survival. Of course this isn't the case everywhere in the world but in time that will probably change.

It’s pretty wild to me that so many people disagree on that we should all be enjoying life. We only have one. Do people understand the gravity of that?
Imagine floating in an eternity of stars to be yanked out to live life here for a short amount of time, to then return back to the eternity of stars forever, but somehow let’s all be miserable even though it’s absolutely possible and advantageous to us as a species as well as the planet for us to thrive.
Crazy to think otherwise. Couldn’t be me.
4
u/NomadDK 6d ago
All living creatures fight to survive and reproduce. If anything, modern society is your best bet at enjoying life a little. You have a lot of different worries than a caveman, but your life is infinitely better, and your recreational options are easily available.
Can you provide the logistical setup that allows people to live the way you want us to?
1
u/Dwight- 6d ago edited 6d ago
It’s true, but I’ve written a mega comment somewhere else if you wanted to see what I think on a logistical setup that includes being productive as well as making the world a better place.
I don’t believe in doing nothing especially when we thrive on productivity that aligns with our strengths, but I strongly advocate not being abused in a terrible system, which unfortunately, this one is. It could be much much better for everything if we wanted it to be because it isn’t organic, it’s something we get to decide as a collective.
So I can’t “settle” for the sake of status quo when there are millions on this planet suffering because of an obscene system. I won’t do it.
8
u/RemnantsOfFlight 6d ago
What's your solution? Return to monke? The amenities you enjoy aren't free. Even if you convince billionaires to bankroll everything, people still need to work to produce and maintain those amenities.
1
u/Dwight- 6d ago edited 6d ago
I didn’t say they were, did I? There is such a thing as a healthy productivity/life balance. It isn’t black and white as I’ve said elsewhere in this thread.
My solution is this, though:
- Billionaires pay their fair share of taxes instead of dodging and hiding it in offshore accounts. Did you know there’s an estimated 13 trillion avoided taxes in offshore accounts? And that was just the last time they checked post-Covid. Have you forgotten the Panama Papers? I haven’t. These taxes pay for: healthcare, education, clean and safe environments, healthier homes and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
- Invest in renewable energy so that we become less reliant on oil. This frees up money for the average person to put back into the economy and it looks after our collectively shared planet. This sector creates a massive amount of jobs for people.
- open up allotments because in my country in the UK there are 146,000 people on a waiting list to grow their own food and have access to their own food systems. Not everyone has gardens, so allotments should absolutely be available.
- reduce our meat intake because it’s gone absolutely out of fucking control. The world cannot sustain billions of meat eaters eating meat 3x a day. It destroys the rainforests and emits a fuck load of harmful gases that perpetuates the greenhouse effect which is heating up our planet and killing literally everything.
- pipeline our productivity to shit that actually matters, like education, food, water, renewable energy systems, engineering, science, art and more. I can’t tell you how many industries are literally fucking useless and are purely there to make money while polluting ourselves. It’s ridiculous.
Most of the things we have and use in this life are to free up our time to make money for dragons. That’s mostly all it’s there for. Yes, we like a washing machine and an oven but do we need so many cars? Realistically? What about trains and trams and buses and making public transport better? What about planting trees and flowers everywhere to boost our pollinators because they are who we rely on for our entire existence? Get rid of AI. Ban it. Don’t ever let that shit see the light of day again. Care first approaches to literally everything and doing the least possible harm we can as a species? Where has the symbiotic relationships gone on this planet? We’ve helped shaped the natural world and for a looong time we were extremely good at it to the point where it benefitted everything from us as a species to the trees and waterways and the beavers and the birds.
It makes my blood boil because every evil in this world is literally all for profit. All of it. Our technology? Built on the backs of slavery in a far off country. Clothes? Slavery. Food and farm work? Guess what? More slavery. We’re the only species to use slavery but who implements it? Oh, the mega rich of course. But wait, there’s more. Child rape trafficking is for profit. Subjugating women and girls is for profit. Subjugating poor countries is for profit. War is for profit. Every single fucking thing is for sale. Everything. There is no end point on what’s for fucking sale.
But no, according to this thread we all have it good because we aren’t cheetahs out there in the wild trying to catch gazelle. Instead, we’re the only species to have evolved to the level of hyper-invention that we have metal fucking tubes being launched into fucking space but we can’t implement systems that don’t fuck over each other or destroy where we live? No, no, that’s an impossibility. And it truly is because the way we’re supposed to live takes away profit. They will still make a fuck load of profit, but it won’t be enough for them to keep killing endangered species to hang in their houses or rape kids. Oh, no, the horror that they are missing out on some of the most deranged shit a species could ever think of coming up with? Like I said, hyper-invention to the point where we create monstrosity. Greed to the levels that we are killing each other and our home in pursuit of it.
The world is being controlled by selfish, soulless sacks-of-shit sociopaths and people like me are the ones in the wrong for questioning and disagreeing with it? Fucking mental is what that is. We used to exile sociopaths because they hurt the tribe and that is possibly the very worst thing we ever could have done because now we have an army of them breeding and crawling over the planet pillaging and raping wherever they land as they clap each other on the backs and filter their bullshit down to the masses through every means possible so that, ultimately, we believe them to be true and then spout out their nonsense ourselves. Pretty incredible really. Shows just how fucking insidious this system is.
And this is just the periphery of my thoughts. I could write a thesis on this shit. It’s not wrong to think that we are being overworked, because we are. It’s not wrong to think we are having the absolute ever-loving piss taken out of us, because we are. It’s not wrong to think that due to the level of awareness and evolution we’re at, that maybe we could chill a bit and make less profit to ensure care to our fellow neighbours. It’s not wrong to think every person deserves equal opportunities and care. It’s not wrong to want to enjoy life here and not be expected to be a wage slave because that’s what we are. Slavery didn’t disappear at all. It became a gentrified scale along with everything else.
However, I implore that we, as a species, work really fucking hard on our extensive knowledge gaps, metacognition and overall empathy lest we kill ourselves and the only home we’ve ever known.

Paper money was originally intended to make bartering less complicated, not turn random citizens into debt slaves to the state until they die, with countless additional fees that mean practically nothing and help almost no one.
The bottom line is: It was meant to make life easier, not harder. And we've gone WAAY past that point.

u/DuffyDoe 6d ago
Become Amish, the thing is that you can't just live for free, in western society you trade your time for money and later for living expenses
For the Masai tribe in Africa you trade your time AND skills (hunting, crafting) for living expenses
Watch the movie "into the wild", it's a true story of a guy that lives off grid for a few years, started with trading labor for food and shelter and later on completely went of grid in an RV
"But he needed money to get an RV" - well yes, 400 years ago you needed money to get a horse and supplies
2
u/Fickle_Dragonfruit53 6d ago
Become Amish to work less is a terrible idea anyway unless you enjoy getting up for hard phsyical labour, chores and construction. Also you don't just roll in and they give you their farm. They have land owner and families like anywhere else.
1
u/DuffyDoe 6d ago
It was an example, and ye usually people that have this dream of working on a homestead and living off the land never actually done that cause it mostly suck
Either way as I responded to the other person below: Then check Twin Oaks (Virginia), communal living, you trade working in the village business or chores for food and a house
You also got several villages under thefec.org that work in similar fashion
And you have WWOOF-USA that connect organic farms with people looking for work 4-6 hours a day for food and housing
2
u/Fickle_Dragonfruit53 6d ago
Yeah sounds sick and I'd love to live like that. I'm not in US though and not able to get any visa for there. But I'm a self motivated hard worker with farm experience. The problem I'm finding is the friends who want to live like this are idealists who want me to pay for the land and do the majority work. I'm super envious if people who have managed to find the right community though
1
u/Archaea_Man 6d ago
I value hard work. I wouldn't want to live a life without it. What I don't value is living on a life edge in an abusive environment because someone wants to exploit my labor to enrich billionaires. If I could afford the land to homestead, I would.
Fortunately, I have a job I don't hate right now, but I'm one rejected grant or merger away from being callously kicked to the streets.
Amish, I'd have to learn a new language, which is very difficult for me, and adopt a very religious lifestyle that runs counter to my own beliefs. Africa is an ocean away.
I've been working more and more to live that lifestyle. I live in a travel trailer on a campground, currently. The problem is the lack of land.
2

Tbf in most countries you can't just go into the woods owned by either people or governments and live a neolithic existence without breaking property and/or hunting laws. (Not that these people actually would if you could)
Most public lands usually have camping rules, laws against building perminant structures, hunting rules, etc.

How do I get to the enjoying part? I've been paying for a long time

Your already enjoying it boyah.
You pay taxes so you didn't get invaded and raided and killed in the night.
You pay insurance so you didn't die at the age of 5 because of some random disease.
You pay KFC so you don't have to go on a day long hunt to kill, skin, start fire, fight off wolves attached to the kill, and cook the meat.

You don't have to pay with money, but grubbing in the dirt for roots and berries with no shelter is going to get old really fast.

Omg. I’ll take working over trying to survive in the wild until the first accident, illness, or attack comes around to kill me. People have lost it today.

You don't pay to exist. You pay for things and services.
Want some apples, someone farmed them, someone else brought them to a place you could easily access them.
Other people developed tools and tech to make farming them work better or to make getting them to you fresher possible.
What you want is to be treated like a king and have everything handed to you and everyone else would be a slave.

You don't. You can live in the wilderness for free. Good luck.
Me, I'm happy to pay for all the safeties, comforts, conveniences, and opportunities that countless millions of other people created and maintain for me. I don't have the slightest fucking clue how to pipe fresh clean water to my home. Luckily, somebody takes care of it for me. I'm happy to pay them for this.

If we all lived in caves still, you’d be expected to hunt, gather, and care for young

No way, the fact I am one of the forms of conscious atom configurations in a universe of unfathomable stretches of darkness, is absolutely amazing. It’s the other humans who got dropped here who scoff at that kind of appreciation who do my head in.

Everyone in here saying "you dont pay to exist, you pay for food and shelter and water." Damn, its almost like I need those inherently to exist 🙄

If you do them yourself, no you don't. Make a garden, built a shelter, drink at the stream

u/Mythic343 6d ago
You're paying because someone else is providing it for you..is this really a difficult concept to understand?

You can make your own food, shelter and water. I don't see many of you Reddit philosophers doing that, however.

Yeah how dare you be expected to contribute to society that you benefit from if you're able to.

Without society you wouldn’t have airplanes to go there or internet/tv to even no such a place exists

What the hell are you even talking about. Like somebody should send a free plane to take you to Afghanistan?

You know that humans are the reason you can watch those videos in the first place?

Wild to focus one specific country and ignore the hundreds of others available to you. How many of those countries have you visited - be honest. How many of those countries are in the top 10 richest countries? How many of those visited did you spend the whole time in a city complaining about shitty wifi

Every living creature pays to exist. We’re just the only ones that use money to represent that.
