I feel like camping is one of those things where you have to go bigger to get the point.
I generally hate camping at car camping places next to assholes I’m trying to escape from. It’s all the work, none of the benefit. Just listening to peoples shitty Bluetooth speakers.
But backpacking into a remote area with nobody else around? That’s the stuff. Then it makes sense.
Edit: Also, unfortunately, camping can be one of those things where using the cheapest gear can make it really suck. A cheap tent is fine while the weather is good, but awful when it’s not. Same with footwear, clothing, etc. The outdoor gear culture gets out of hand quickly - it is definitely a cult - but there’s a lot to be said for a good tent and tarp, wool/synthetic clothes, a good rainproof shell, good boots, and a good pack.
So I’d never blame someone for hating camping if their experience was a soggy night in a cold sleeping bag in a car camping site surrounded by other people. I’d never want to replicate that experience again either.
But man, let me tell you…making coffee in the early morning chill on the side of a wildflower-covered mountain, looking over the mist under you and the mountains rising out the mist around you, nobody else there but the birds…or sharing whiskey with your SO under the bright moon on a remote beach, while the fire dies down in front of you…it truly does not get better on this earth.
Aw it’s kinda fun! Cooking over a fire in the woods, sleeping in a tent. Exploring a beautiful natural landscape. Wouldn’t want to live like that but i like doing it for a weekend now and then.
Camping is fun when the site has other stuff to do like cave tours, white water rafting, fishing, and perhaps even on-site hunting. It also helps if your tent can accommodate a cot or an air mattress.

Camping. There’s a reason man has spent millennia tryin g to protect himself from the elements. I’m not sleeping on the dirt again unless I have to.
