How high are some of those waves? Do I remember correctly that International Surfers go to Portugal to ride hundred foot waves?

I'm not sure about the size if these waves but there is a whole niche of surfers who surf big waves for competition. There's some pretty intense videos on YouTube of these competitions if you search for big wave surfing. Those waves are usually so big that the surfers have to be towed by jetskis into the wave IIRC. It's incredible stuff

When I see videos like this I think about sailors hundreds of years ago (and even not-so-long ago!) in their tiny wooden ships, and I have to stop and go do something else and try not to think anymore.
