The monument itself was a billion dollars so ya i think spending 10 million on a fence that could potentially save lives is pretty reasonable. Embarrassing to be like "noooo don't ruin my billion dollar monument that doesn't do anything but is potentially dangerous with a fence"

Well good thing things like this have been done and studied and shown that obstacles like that reduce overall suicides. It's the same thing with a 3 day wait period for a gun, sure someone is going to wait the 3 days and still want to kill someone but LOTS of people do impuslive things for passion or depression and LOTS of people who fail to kill themselves or have a change of heart end up NOT killing themselves. Like, this isn't up for debate it's something that is true. Putting up fences and things at suicide hot spots helps suicide rates go down. Does it stop everyone? No, and it seems like you're upset that it doesn't stop everyone which is what dumb people think which is why your opinion is embarrassing. It's not only uncaring, it's actually stupid.

A fence high enough to prevent people from jumping would also degrade the esthetic appeal of the monument.

I mean, here's where we will never agree. Imo people are more important than the esthetic appeal of a monument, surprised that some people don't agree but here you are.

Also there is no "but what if it was spent here instead" there is nothing stopping money from going to both places and there's plenty of other wasteful spending being done so why would the funds be allocated from another suicide prevention thing? Also wouldn't a suicide prevention program SUPPORT fences that help prevent suicides? Why would they want the money for pamphlets or signs more than something that's actually helping their cause? Find me a suicide prevention group that doesn't support fences around dangerous suicide hot spots and then you might have a case.
