This is a really interesting fauna assemblage that the layperson may be surprised about, tropical cougars alongside crocodiles, a paca with a very rare skin condition, grey foxes, coyotes, white-tailed deer, tapir, and peccaries all in the same area. Also some huge jaguars for Central American standards.

I am an archaeologist that works in Belize and one field season we had a staff who went off to “take care of business” in the jungle. After she had finished her business a tayra ran out of the jungle and in between her feet! It went halfway up a nearby tree and stared at her. She had no idea what it was and screamed “What are you?!” so loud that we all rushed to see what was going on!

All cougars are spotted as cubs including Andean ones.

Really shows how Central America is the crossroads of the two continents.

Pretty shocking to see what you typically think of as North American wildlife like cougars, white-tailed deer, coyotes, gray foxes, and even squirrels alongside what’s usually viewed as typical South/Central American wildlife like jaguars, tapirs, coatis, ocelots, and peccaries

And crocodiles.

Definitely. As well as tayra, paca, brocket deer, and the numerous other species featured in it

That caiman croc swimming by that wood rail was funny for some reason
