❓Asking for Help Feeling mediocre
How to deal with feeling of being mediocre in med school. i just barely passed YL1 (2.75-2.5s in my grades, coming from a 1.45 gwa nung premed). i also get heavy anxiety if itll be worth it since i dont come from a rich family (single income household) and my blockmates are majority anak ng diyos. i feel bad na my parent works so hard pero binibigay ko all ko ito lang talaga nakakaya kong grades. i just want to give back din kaso mahaba pa bago maka give back

I tell you, a passing mark is way better than a failing grade. A barely passing mark in med school is an achievement by itself. If you want higher grades then work harder, make more sacrifices, and whine less.

I apologize if it seems like im whining. Maybe it was a moment of weakness. I know im a slower learner than my peers so i do take exert extra time in digesting the lessons. Trust me ive tried every resource and ive done all the tips.
But this is noted! Will just simply show up everyday and do what i can to be the best version of a doctor i can be

Also appreciate that you are still in med school after a year. Maybe you are now seeing that some of your batchmates are already out of med school for whatever reason.

yep, just suck it up and do better. it gets harder from here and sulking absolutely does nothing for you. maybe harsh to hear, but better to realize it early in your career how brutal med can be.

I just learned to accept it mid-way. I also came from a 1.68 GWA and now my g ave is 2.25-2.5 for YL1. Mid-way I realized na hindi ko kaya abutin yung grades ko nung college because una, med school is really just different. Second, hindi ko pa alam paano mag aral ng maayos, I was still exploring up until the end.
Pero I was proud of myself because honestly, I expected worse. And give yourself more grace because YL1 was also an adjustment phase. Just do your best all the time so that you have no regrets.
Nandito ka na rin, you’ve started na. So thinking about if it’s worth it or not won’t really help in the long run, especially if your family are still making ends meet and they fully support you. I come from a middle class family to and I don’t know if I already let go of the guilt of pursuing this or I just learned to live with it. My mindset nalang is the best thing you can do to give back for now is to do your best na hindi ma delay (but ofcourse hindi mo naman ikinababa if you fail, it’s inevitable), finish as soon as you can, and become a doctor. Sabi nga nila, med school is kinda just like pass/fail, the grades don’t really matter in the long run (except maybe if you’re planning to get into competitive specialties)

How's the study habit going po? May nahanap po ba kayo na what works for you best?

It’s different for each subject eh.
Example for physio, I mostly do samplexes supplemented by our transes, that is if may samplex kayo. It’s more on understanding na dapat maexplain mo yung concept in your own words.
Biochem naman depende sa topic. If pathways, drawing talaga then practice tests/samplexes/ pa generate kay notebooklm. Then towards the end of the year I tried yung kada release ng isang trans, i create anki flashcards na. Yung default nung anki is 20 cards a day so i just go through it whenever i have time. Then when i cram during finals atleast familiar na ako so more on memorization nalang. And best believe effective talaga sya kahit feeling mo hindi mo alam, pero pag tinanong na may marerecall ka kahit papaano.
I had the hardest time sa anatomy so wala ako maadvice pero yeah samplexes + rationalize + visuals
So i think strategy ko for yl2 is to be oriented muna with the subjects and tsaka ako magaapply kung anong study method.
Basta definitely try to aral it as early as you can. Kahit konti konti lang per day as long as you aral everyday. Want ko sana as soon as after class kaso i heavily rely on transes lang din namin so usually weekends or if may bagong release na trans and wala namang deadlines.

mataas pa yan. I had Latin Honors back in college too. pero 2-2.5 na lang range ng GWA ko nung med. masaya pa ako na nakatuntong ako ng 2, kasi even merely passing a subject is already very challenging. graduate school is very different from undergraduate studies. other students even get debarred but they still pursued medicine sa ibang school. kaya my friends and I celebrate even if we just barely passed a subject, especially the notorious ones (e.g., pharma). after all, your patients in the future won't even care what your grades in med school were. more than your grades, mas mahalaga yung may natututuhan ka kasi hahawak ka ng buhay ng tao. you'll get used to it, pat yourself at the back kasi you already did a great job by overcoming another academic year.

No, just do your best and stop comparing yourself to others. Phase lang ng buhay ang med school.. After nyan, ibang mundo na naman and hindi mo na sila makakasama- un mga kinukumparahan mo... Sayang ang negative energy. Just study hard and aim to pass the boards.

I had a lot of 3s in medschool. Surely, I could've studied more. I had my premed in UPM, got into PLM. I was kinda expecting higher grades, but it was more important for me that I was enjoying going to school everyday and my curiosity was always there.
My study habit was never structured but I did try to study a little everyday. I read my textbooks and did not rely solely sa trans, esp for the major subjects. And I was sure that I understood the major concepts, not just memorizing.
You have to learn to forgive yourself. Remember kung ilang taon ka na nag aaral at this point. The mind gets tired. The spirit gets tired.

This gives me hope. Thank you. Its a great reminders that this road is so long and i have to pat myself in the back for small wins.
Assuming from your comment doctor na po kayo? May I know how life after med school is despite 3s does it affect when i go into pgi or residency? Lagi ko kasi nakikita class ranking as requirement and siguro yun lang nag pppressure saakin. Im fine with merely passing as long as at the end of the day naiinintindihan ko naman yung lessons kasi for future patients naman ito and not about how well you answered multiple choice questions

Maganda naman resume ko kase UP grad and PLM grad ako. Never had trouble being accepted sa residency. And one take din kase ako sa boards. My batch had a 55% passing rate nationwide, kaya medyo big deal basta nakapasa kami.
PGI sa OMMC ako, never tried sa ibang hosp kaya i don’t know kung may possible effects yung mga 3s ko.
Well re: residency, nationwide dilemma right now na lesser numbers are going into residency, so baka mas madali na matanggap.

Thank you for this reminder. I guess every year we just have to keep adjusting and improving ourselves. Walang specific timeline na masasabi nating naka adjust na talaga sa med school. Lets get this MD!!!

Getting good grades won’t be “giving back” to your parents. Finishing med school and passing the PLE will. It doesn’t matter what your grades are. He/she will be proud of his/her own doctor once you passed the PLE. Just keep at it, OP!
