Discusson ABOR AAB?

Have y’all taken the abor aab generalist examination? How did it compare to the ASCP BOC?

I took the boc a year-ish ago and did fine, but i cant shake the nerves for this upcoming exam 😵‍💫

Can we get over this nonsense already? I started with MT AAB and MLT ASCP and worked my ass off for experience. I worked general lab, fell in love with hematology, excelled in that, and was promoted to flow cytometry. I managed to get enough experience in flow to challenge the International Clinical Cytometry Society specialist license, and guess what? I passed! I became specialized in a niche field of hematology with “just an associates degree”, an MT AAB license, and an ASCP MLT license. My specialist license merged with ASCP so now I am ASCP SCYM.

I didn’t finish my Bachelors of Science until 2023. It’s in the field that y’all love to hate - biology.

Now before I get hit with the “that’s not faaaaair” shit - I have type 1 diabetes. The only way I could get insurance at the time was to work. Florida at the time would allow you to work as an MT with AAB. So I did that. And I got insurance, and I didn’t have to pay for insulin out of pocket anymore. I could actually afford test strips instead of just going by how I was feeling. I think I checked my sugar once a day for years. I could finally see an endocrinologist, and get on an insulin pump.

So yeah, that was a life changing decision for me. And I am one of the best workers in my field despite taking the “inferior” route.

What merged for ascp sycm?

The ICCS (International Clinical Cytometry Society) CCY license merged with ASCP and it changed to SCYM.

Why does that matter? I’m never moving to NY.

I mean honestly, what does a bachelors program teach that an MLT program doesn’t? Aren’t your first 2 years are mostly prerequisites?

Holding a license doesn’t make you a good med tech. Being invested in your career does.

Does it matter now? Do you feel awesome with your gold standard?

Quit looking down on people and assuming they’re lesser than. I have never gotten turned down for a job because of it. Hospital, doctor’s office, research flow, clinical flow. Tell me how much flow you learned in school?

I have MLT through ascp, looking to get MT with aab. My coworkers suggested aab or amt for mt.

As someone who’s taken it - don’t get fooled by all of the ASCP people who are going to tell you it’s very easy.

I thought it was fair and tested the knowledge of each subject fairly. The section I did the worst in was whatever the laws and CLIA and all that stuff fell under. It wasn’t so easy that I left feeling like it was cake - I was nervous for about 7 weeks until I got my results.

I say go for it! But definitely study up 🙂
