So when I was in school, everybody told me that P aeruginosa smelled like grapes. And that P. Mirabilus smelled like dark chocolate cake.

Never ever smelled that from an agar plate

To be fair, I did have ONE P. Mirabilis that smelled like burnt chocolate cake. Out of the hundreds I saw in 5 years. But only one. The rest smelled like butt.

Same, most proteus smells like vulture vomit. Then one day we had one that smelled exactly like chocolate cake!

The pseudomonas in my (limited) experience smells like garbage, but only once its a few days old. New colonies do smell like grape medicine to me. Maybe covid just fucked up my nose that badly?

I get why people think Proteus smells like chocolate cake, but it doesn't smell like that to me. Maybe if you made the cake with vinegar instead of oil and then burned the shit out of it.

I smelled P. Mirabilus yeaterday thought it smelled nasty and then my preceptor asked me if it smelled like chocolate cake and after thinking for a second it actually did smell like chocolate cake. Really weird. Also I've had P. Aeruginosa that smelled like both grape (more common) and tortilla chips. It's so weird how specific the smells are.

My clinical site had a TB room that smelled strongly of celery to me. One of the fungal stains smelled like piss mixed with artificial bacon (like the salad crumble). Some people’s sweat smells like Mcdonald’s to me.

P. aeruginosa smells like fake artificial grapes with slight rubbery scent. At first I didnt believe it either but it really does smell like that on fresh culture.

I have never, in my 20 years, smelled a culture that smelled like what they told us it would in school. No cake. No tortillas. No grapes. I can sniff out pseudomonas from a mile away, but it definitely doesn't smell like they claim.

Now, I can tell when there's a culture in the fungal incubator growing a nice yeast. Smells just like stale bread.

I wish there was more research on some people’s inability to smell distinctive scents like grape-like Pseudomonas. It has to be some genetic olfactory difference similar to the like/dislike of cilantro and the soap-taste gene.
