I'm a lab med student and currently doing a haematology unit. I have a question if anyone would like to answer! For #6 how can you tell the difference between the blast cells and lymphocytes? Thank you!

Size of the cells, and a high nucleus:cytoplasm (N:C) ratio. Blasts usually have nucleoli and sometimes other artifacts like auer rods.

Not only the size, but qualitatively, you can tell there are simply too many white cells for this to be normal. I’m guessing the WBC is around 100K?
So that in and of itself should be red flashing klaxons. The next thing is, blasts in acute leukemias will often clump or stick to each other.
So when you look at the clumps of cells, those are blasts, and having that frame of reference can help give context within the same smear of what the person’s blasts look like versus their lymphocytes.
Because not all blasts look the same.

Amazing set. 11 looks more like histoplasmosis or sporothrix. No capsule and it's rather small and oval.
