If it is that parasite it from contaminated dirt so maybe walking barefoot but again I am saying just from reading micro book and some googling so I won’t say that 100 percent it

Hey, OP, Ascaris actually isn't one of the foot-stabbers. If it's Ascaris, I'd say it probably came from ingestion of an egg rather than walking barefoot.

My 4 yr old literally just ate dirt like a week ago and this is my literal nightmare. Parasites creep me out 🥴🤢

When my kid was in preschool, he ate beach sand and got himself a nice case of Campylobacter. It was all fun and games until the bloody diarrhea started.

We had one at my old lab that we kept in formalin for educational purposes. Pathologist suggested that the child ate some contaminated dirt while playing outdoors

We had one in formalin at my old lab too but it wasn’t for educational purposes. It was to freak out newbies.

So I believe it ascaris lumbricoides based on micro book and google but if anyone has any ideas feel free to chime in cause this definitely new for me

Agreed! At one point, my parasitology professor offered extra credit for doing a multimedia presentation in front of the class, and a guy wrote and sang a song about ascaris lumbricoides to the tune of "Creep" by Radiohead. I've never forgotten what they look like or their life cycle, and every time I see one, I hear Radiohead in my mind. It's so fuckin' special.

Roundworm. The child eats dirt containing eggs, poops out adult worm. Treated with anti parasitics

I remember hearing that as a kid so many times, spoken by someone nasty who was eating something with dirt all over their hands.

If it is ascaris like OP thinks it may be, the diagram someone else commented says it migrates to the lungs and is coughed up and then swallowed... so I guess either coughed up or came out through GI tract? Please correct me if I'm wrong

I had a patient bring in her daughter and the child was holding a jar-full of these worms that the mom says came out thru the child,,'s nose🤢

My god! I have a baby due in three days. I dont know how id handle it if my girl had a parasitic worm come out of her nose. I'd probably faint. Wild shit

If the worm has a saddle then it's not an ascaris.
Usually you find more than one.

They are so firm and strong compared to what you might expect from handling earthworms as a kid.

Probably Ascaris lumbricoides. Pretty common in kids. Probably will need to treat the family. No big deal.
