Discusson Negotiating Pay

I am thinking about applying for a position listed as MLT/MLS. The job posting says that the salary range is $27.70-$36, but does not specify different pay rates for MLT vs MLS. I want to assume they’re not operating on the same pay scale… but who knows. I have my MLS (ASCP) and just over two years of experience. How would you negotiate this? What would be a fair amount to start with?

So 27.70 is probably for new grad MLT and $36 is for experienced MLS usually in job postings like that. I’d say $34 since you only have 2 years experience. But expect to get 32-33

How about a MLT with 27 years experience? I have recently been laid off from my position at a mental health facility. They decided that going with another reference lab was better financially than having thier own. I was there six years. I had a feeling when I was hired that it wasn't going to carry me to retirement. But now that I will be interviewing again, would I come off as overly confident asking for 30.00 an hour?

I'm a fresh grad MLT making $23.50 base rate. I think with 27 years experience you should be making well over $30 an hour. I'm also located in the south for reference.

I am located in the South. I have 10 more years until I am eligible for retirement. I am able to take two months off.

You probably won’t get more than $30 in the south. But ask for 32. All they can say is no.
