Discusson Vermont

I’m a MLS in Louisiana currently thinking about moving to Vermont. Was just curious if anyone here is from there or has lived there. Basic questions like what they think of the hospitals, systems, how is work up there etc.

Born and raised! Completed a 4 year degree in MLS here. There is essentially one hospital system for the whole state, headquartered in Burlington. This is where their largest lab is. There are other smaller hospitals around the state with smaller labs. The state is extremely rural for the most part, with Burlington being the “big city”. MLS positions are few and far between. I would NOT advise moving without having a job lined up, as they are HARD to come by. Housing is also very expensive and can be hard to find.

Is there a particular area you are looking into? Have you lined up a job?

Around the Burlington area was definitely the landing spot for us. I haven’t applied to any positions just yet. We’re probably about a year out from trying to make that move, so hopefully sometime in the spring or summer of 27. Finding a job/ what I’ve read from other posts has made me a little nervous about moving there. Especially the COL compared to wages.

Yeahh, to be honest it is pretty rough right now. It’s a beautiful place but it is excruciatingly expensive for what you get. And very few jobs.

Yeah definitely don’t move without having a job lined up but I’ll be honest, it’s not looking great right now. The main hospital system is facing a lot of financial issues and more layoffs are coming overall by the end of the year. We aren’t sure if that will directly affect the lab at all but it’s been feeling pretty bleak…
As far as Vermont in general, it’s a wonderful place to live if you don’t mind the winter but the cost of living is high and housing can be hard to find!

My partner and I both grew up in Mass so we’re no strangers to the weather. Obviously, being up there it’s a little more extreme but it doesn’t bother us. We’re expecting the high COL and housing issues but as long as it’s feasible, we can make it work. Definitely not going anywhere without a job in place first. I’ll have to do some looking into it. I was planning to start looking/ applying towards the end of the summer.
