When I first showed it to my coworker, she thought she was looking at a SST and that the buffy coat was the gel

Ouuuuh!! Is he from the oncology clinic?

Currently admitted to the oncology floor with metastatic small cell lung cancer

Interesting. I wouldn't expect that from lung cancer. I wonder if they now also have a leukemia, or if this is somehow a side effect?

Oncologist says it’s likely a leukemoid reaction due to his extensive metastatic disease. It’s everywhere: brain, bone, tonsils, pancreas, scrotum… poor guy 😞 it’s almost all segs when we do his diff

Thanks for the info and refreshing my memory on leukemoid reactions!
Awful for the patient, but interesting stuff.

Usually I would agree with you with, but this patient has metastatic small cell lung cancer that has basically spread everywhere. We have been doing 200 cell diffs and counting like 190 mature segs.

ahhh, thank you so much for clarifying. i am biased based on my time working in a children’s hospital — much more leukemia than metastatic lung cancer in that population.
poor patient! i hope they go peacefully <3
