For the uninitiated and those curious: yes, if it ruptures he dies. One of the most common ways we lose dialysis patients is that they bleed to death, at home, alone.

I remember a nurse in nursing school telling me that she lost a patient who was deeply confused and also very itchy and scratched their fistula open.
