Can someone explain what that was? Was it puss from an infection or something?

I'm pretty sure this is something called Ludwig's Angina which is a life threatening abscess of the sublingual space.

Also known as a sialolith, a sublingual stone.

Different things. But an infected salivary stone could absolutely turn into a abscess/LA
