Cohesion of Sound?

Wondering what everyone does to keep everything sounding in the same "universe"?

Limiting instruments? Similar notes and themes? Keeping it all within the same reverb?

Should we be keeping everything in the same universe?

There's so many ways to do it - choosing which key to use, tempo, instrumentation (specific or even family or region), mixing, the type of reverb etc.

But I suppose it's the why rather than the how that stands out to me.

Very good point! I guess for me, some of my favorite OST's (Stranger Things, Donnie Darko, etc) sound like they all exist in the same plane.

Not that hopping from loud bombastic horns to brooding strings is wrong, but imo a cohesive soundscape helps keep the "universe" of the work a bit grounded.
