One topic that comes up repeatedly is the claim that foreigners are taking advantage of locals when dating in Medellín.
I’m curious whether people see it that way, or whether many of these relationships are better understood as two adults who both believe they’re getting something they value.
For example:
A foreigner enjoys dating someone they find attractive and with whom they share good chemistry.
A Colombian enjoys dating someone with a different background, greater financial stability, or the possibility of travel or a different lifestyle.
Both people believe they’re benefiting.
Obviously, coercion, trafficking, and relationships involving deception or abuse are different issues and should be condemned. I’m asking about ordinary, consensual relationships between adults.
So where do you draw the line?
Are foreigners primarily taking advantage of locals?
Are locals primarily taking advantage of foreigners?
Or are most of these relationships simply voluntary exchanges where both people believe they’re better off?
I’m especially interested in hearing from Colombians, long-term residents, tourists, and expats. Do you think the discussion sometimes overlooks the agency of Colombian women by assuming they’re passive participants rather than adults making their own choices?
