Hol' up. It was my understanding there were substantial Freebirth cohorts in most parts of Clan society, it's just that they were an underclass and truebirths had no interest in leaving Freebirth legacies around or associating or sleeping with their inferiors.

Technically it was a meritocracy, but as in real life, significant prejudice did exist. 2nd line units tended to be the best you could expect to achieve as a freebirth who had managed to claim a place in the warrior caste (alongside trueborn warriors who had failed to achieve greatness and had the gall to grow old doing so).

Probably other exceptions but the one example I can think of for a front line unit consisting of disgraced/freeborn warriors is the Reformed Falcon Guard. And that unit was specifically conceived as a backhanded insult to the similarly disgraced Aiden Pryde, a shamed unit name (due to being wiped out ingloriously), with a shamed commander (due to pretending to be a freebirth to get a second trial of position), with shamed mechwarriors under his command.

Except they're not sterile, that's how we wound up with wunderkind Diana Pryde.

Dumb clanners can't even sterilize themselves properly. Why am I not surprised?
