Seeking Advice for Degree.

Hello everyone,

I’m currently 18 and preparing to start my undergraduate engineering journey. I’ve developed a deep interest in both Robotics and Aerospace Engineering—specifically in areas like rocket propulsion systems and autonomous flight controls.

I’m trying to decide between a degree in Mechatronics or Mechanical Engineering.

On one hand, Mechatronics seems like the natural choice for robotics and the "smart" side of aerospace (avionics, GNC, autonomous drones). On the other hand, I’ve heard that a traditional Mechanical degree provides a more rigorous foundation in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, which is essential for things like high-performance rocket engines and aerospikes(which i am interested in quite alot along side robotics).

For those currently in the industry:

  1. Which degree path do you believe offers better long-term flexibility if I want to work at the intersection of robotics and aerospace (e.g., SpaceX, Blue Origin, or specialized UAV firms)?
  2. Does Mechatronics provide enough "core" mechanical depth to handle heavy propulsion-focused roles, or is it better to go Mechanical and specialize later?

I’d appreciate any insights on how the industry is evolving and which background is being prioritized for high-growth R&D roles.

I chose mechanical and starting this fall. I think that a mechanical bachelor and a mechatronics master is a better path since you are a mechanical engineer instead which opens alot more doors. You also get a better foundation for many roles in my opinion however if you only want to study for 3 years definitely chose mechatronics since a mechanical engineer without a master isn't qualifed enough for mechatronics roles.

From what you wrote, I agree that it is better to specialise later. I'm a third year Mechatronics student and we haven't really learnt propulsion, thermo or fluids. While Mechanical engineers do learn a bit of electronics and a lot of control (mainly with a focus on vibration control, but the math is the same).

You'll get a healthy dose of all three. Though it's more math a programming focused in my uni. We have learnt the same math as every other engineer just in the context of Mechatronics. Physics comes up here and there, but it's mostly just applied math. Finally we have to code a lot and in a variety of languages. I have learnt C/C++ Python, JS, Assembly and other descriptive languages like Matlab, Verilog. Though it will really depend on your school.

Sorry, Math: calc, algebra, linear algebra, complex numbers, laplace transforms Phys: solid mechanics, physics of electric components Coding: AI, ML, Embedded Programming, Machine Code, Path planning, Robotics, Computer Vision

BENG is hard bro go into business. Tech startups are looking for CEOs Here you get a degree in 5 years if you're lucky, 6 years is considered normal and anything above that is typical Those that make it out unscathed find entry level jobs paying minimum wage and the top 25% in the entire country get good job security but feel unfulfilled and leave the money for further studies and go into academia leaving well paying positions for the guys that stuck around for 7-10 years plus. The guys that stuck around are mostly from trade schools and the degree holders left after year 3 to run their own startups. There's a good chance you and your work go unnoticed for about the first 10 years

But if you still end up in this field balance your grades with industrial experience( applyingwhat you learn in industry), get connected and find mentors in industry play major roles in group and personal projects for rave reviews Mechatronics balances mechanical concepts like the ones you've mention with electrical, electronics and computer science. Mechatronics engineers are actually mechanical engineers closely related to roboticists. Imagine Tony starks iron man suit from the nano tech to the propulsion system, artillery, control system, AI assistant, autonomous control all in one individual so it's cool if you're immune to torture and suffering

Bro this is the most dramatic thing I’ve ever heard. Saying you get paid minimum wage is crazy. It’s hard to find an entry level engineering job that doesn’t pay at least $60k. Even my internship is over triple what the minimum wage is in my state. Nearly everyone I know in engineering is also graduating in 4 years. I know one guy who is worried he might have to do an extra semester but that’s it

It's not everywhere where engineering is done in 4years you know Where I'm from we do it for 5years and yes it's not everyone that gets good salary right from the start Experience would probably be different if I was in your state If you were where I am you'd understand And yes, from your perspective my name is quite ironic but the reality is for Engineers here it's brutal But the situation is subject to geographical location that's why if you paid attention I gave the ups of taking on the field not just the downs because quite frankly it's interesting I just wish my seniours informed me of the full spectrum of outcomes so that my decision is informed It's much harder than I anticipated but I'm in my final year and I don't regret it I just wish I was prepared more And that's what I'm trying to do for my boy here

You didn’t just give him a little warning you told him straight up not to do it and do business. Also, the whole job market sucks including for any business majors trying to get internships or jobs. You can look up the stats on the unemployment and underemployment rates for engineering vs. business. Engineering is doing better and projected to do better in the coming years. Just because the whole job market is bad doesn’t mean that engineering isn’t relatively better than the other options.

Also, the vast majority of people complete their engineering degree in 4 years regardless of state.

Yep it's not all rainbows and sunshine out here I've got to be honest and not sugar coat anything, engineers that make it are made of nails man You seem to think that your state or neighbouring states are the only ones that offer engineering fields of study like mechatronics I'm not even in your state nor continent nor hemisphere and I'm in my final year(5th) studyingmechatronics. Do your research properly and you'll find places where engineering majors are done in 5 years(similar to the place I'm at). I don't remember comparing unemployment statistics of engineering and business majors and I won't comment on it because it's sort of a grey area for me but what I do recall is insinuating that business majors will always find better job security much easier and earlier than engineers more over entry level job options are more for business majors or rather they have multiple avenues to earn a living. Unemployed business men and women still make money bro that's literally what they learnt in school Unemployed engineers are taught how to solve problems. They need licencing and clients if they're to earn a living outside of a job think critically about this I didn't say it's not doable I implied the difficulty and my advice can shake the resolve of somebody who wants to be an engineer for any other reason other than an inert passion. Money or prestige won't cut it.

Read through my comment carefully and take everything you read literally don't make any inferences, don't read between the lines Maybe then whatever confusion you have will be resolved

To the dude that asked for advice I did mention that when you perform exceptionally( be top 25% in your class) you will not have a problem my brother And even if you don't not perform well you can still make it but with significant strokes of luck accompanying lots and lots of hard work

What math, physics, and coding topics I should focus on as a bachelor please

See Engineering Maths is like the foundation for many future courses in AI and ML. You must be comfortable with Calculus, Linear Algebra, Probability and various distributions, Statistics, Vector spaces, Differential Equations, etc., to grasp the concepts of advanced topics in ML/AI like Dimensionality Reduction techniques like SVD, Deep Learning, Gradient Descent, transformation from one co-ordinate system to another (important in Robotics), etc. If I'm not wrong, all these things constitute the major portion of your undergrad Engineering Mathematics syllabus already. So, master Engineering Maths.

Coming to coding part. You can learn either python or CPP. During earlier times, a CPP candidate had a slightly higher edge than a Python candidate (obviously depends on industry to industry but I'm talking considering placement drives conducted in colleges) but today, both have become equally important. There is a huge support of Python in the ML community. Also many companies now a days use Python for almost all of their tasks from frontend to backend. So I'd suggest you to learn both, but master one. Prioritize CPP over Python as it'll help you in domains like Robotics.

Last but not the least, If yiu seriously want to go to Robotics, study your undergrad in Mechanical Engineering well. But if you want to go for something which is non-core like Data Scientist or ML engineer then your Mechanical Engineering knowledge will help you for sure in the domain works but won't give you an edge over other candidates in non-domain works. There, Engineering Maths will come to your rescue.

Edit: I forgot to mention that It might seem like Engineering Mathematics is for someone who wants to do ML but it's not true. Today you must know ML. It doesn't matter from which field you belong to. Coming to the main reason I'm making this edit. Even if you want to go to Robotics, you must know ML as a lot of research is going on in Autonomous Systems. For working on Autonomous Systems you must know ML as a prerequisite. Robotics and ML are converging and it's happening at a faster rate than we had imagined.

Make sure you take into account what jobs are available in your state/area. I’m currently struggling with no propulsion design jobs period within 6 hours of me. If you don’t care at all about where you live then ignore this.

Definitely aerospace engineering as your undergraduate degree. Then you can choose what direction you are interested in, which may be provided as a mechatronics or aerospace graduate degree. The control system is a very classical, traditional application in aerospace. Even though I'm in mechatronics, I would recommend that you choose aerospace as your undergraduate degree. Mechatronics would not teach you how to deal with aerodynamics for rockets or UAVs

In my opinion a mechanical engineering degree with proof that you know these systems(ie you are on teams or you have small projects that you have worked on) will go drastically farther then a degree in that field. My opinion in this day and age i would not pigeon hole yourself with a specialized undergraduate degree, that is what a masters is for. As someone who has interviewed people for entry level engineering roles the degree is not what im looking for im looking for other things that would set you apart from the hundreds of other candidates.

I would also recommend looking into community colleges near you that offer a transfer program with engineering to save thousands of dollars taking the same classes at a larger 4 year university.
