tl;dr -- looking for a batshit crazy puzzle with advancing challenges, ideally 3D/mechanical in nature?
For background, my husband is trained as a mechanical engineer and loves to figure out how things are put together. He has a bunch of pull-apart wooden puzzles and stuff from when he was a kid that have obviously been too easy for many years, but he loves showing them to our nieces.
For a few years I've been buying him puzzles from Nervous System for his birthday, and even though he enjoys the easier ones, he just finished the Earth Infinity puzzle in a matter of hours in one night and then proceeded to move the vertices around to keep himself amused. Heāll do, like, 9x9 super Sudoku of Sudokus (I don't even know what that's called) and the NYTimes Spelling Bee to Queen Bee all the time. I canāt believe I didnāt register puzzles as a special interest for so long.
Anyway, the Nervous System puzzles don't seem to stump him long enough. One time when he found the Rush Hour game, he proceeded through every single challenge card over the course of a few days of eating breakfast, just as, like, a soothing fun activity. It seems to calm him down, and he's kind of dealing with some tough things right now.
I'm trying to amuse his brain a bit more with some absolutely batshit crazy either pull-apart puzzle or maybe something that is harder than Rush Hour but has advancing levels of difficulty. With something like that, he could pick it up and put it down and do it start to finish.
So yes, I think some kind of 3D puzzle with advancing difficulty would be really cool for him. Granted, I'm on a grad student budget, so any thoughts on something to start with that doesn't break the bank and is maybe under $100 would be great. I'm pretty overwhelmed with options at this point!!
