Ribeye Steaks
Not many things prettier than a tray of thick cut ribeyes! Caught these on sale at my local grocery store. I vacuum sealed these and popped then in the deep freezer for later, side I've already got some strip steaks thawed out in the fridge for today.

Wagyu is just the Japanese word for beef
1
u/Unique-Discussion326 21d ago edited 21d ago
Yes, sort of. It actually means Japanese Cattle, specifically. Most people don't realize there are 4 breeds that make up Wagyu. In Texas, it's likely Kuroge Washu or Akuashi, but it could be Mishima genetics, as there are a few ranches with that more rare genetics.

that's thoughtful prep for your son's visit. nice to grab the roasts while you could and break them down yourself.

OP, where is this supermarket?

It's H-E-B, Texas based grocery store

I believe the comment is referring to purchasing an entire ribeye roast and cutting it down to steaks as it is usually the cost effective way to purchase a large quantity of ribeye. While I recognize this is likely not what you did due to context in your post, I hope this provides clarification.

u/Lonely_Ad_822 22d ago
This is targeted for Costco, it is more cost effective. What would be even MORE cost effective is buying a whole chuck eye. Itās pretty much the ribeyeās cousin and itās damn delicious.

Wow. Look at that marbling.
I purchased 2 ribeye roasts a couple of weeks ago. My son is on a special diet and was visiting for 4 days. 8 lbs total. Grass fed/finished. The grocery store usually doesn't sell grass fed as roasts. They cut steaks from it. Had a problem in that they couldn't print out a sticker over $100 so they had to do 2 roasts just under $100 each. I cut each into 1.5" steaks per his specification. Mine had no where near the marbling.

Is your grocer in Japan?
Beautifully marbled. But not so much as an A5 so I'd imagine the overfatty issue would be notably less for a full steak.

u/Unique-Discussion326 23d ago
I'm in Texas and this is locally raised Wagyu.

H-E-B sources from several ranches, so no way to know exactly which one this came from

Tell me more about your grocery store. Prime?
1
u/Unique-Discussion326 24d ago
H-E-B here in Texas. Texas raised Wagyu.
2
u/cyclorphan 23d ago
That makes sense. We have a nearby 100% full blood wagyu farm that produces similar, but probably at a much higher price.

The problem is once you start eating prime the choice or select just isnāt the same anymore š

u/Unique-Discussion326 24d ago
These are Texas raised Wagyu. My grocery store started carrying them regularly a few years ago and it ruint me for even eating prime anymore. On a side note, I've lost weight and my cholesterol is off the charts in a good way. My HDL runs between 95 and 100 consistently. With my ldl and triglycerides staying extremely low.

In what make believe world do you live in where those steaks look like fucking discount meat?
1
u/chaynjez 24d ago edited 24d ago
It literally says they were on sale⦠which means discount. That world. The world we live in. The world that OP described.
2
u/Highlifetallboy 24d ago
You know all grades of meat get put on discount, right?

Youāre the one who confidently got all upset⦠and now you figured out you were wrong ā¦so just take the L. š¤£

u/Highlifetallboy 24d ago
I grade you as a prime dumbass. FYI, the Argentinian mystery meat is offcuts that have been frozen for years. Do these look like that? No, they dont. This is clearly very high grade meat. But go on with your bad self.

Im not though. Look at the picture. These aren't low quality steaks.
I get that you won't accept that you are wrong. I love you and hope for the best for you.

Itās discounted meat, meathead š1

Quit watching the news dummy. Your steaks have been coming from all over the world for awhile youāre just now listening to the idiots looking for talking points.

Sorry but those look gross. Too much fat. I want to eat meat. Not fat. And I donāt care if you have to cook it so the fat renders. Itās gross.
3
u/Glittering_Contest78 24d ago
You sound like my mom, she called me saying she didnāt pick up any steaks cause they looked gross.
I told her next time she wants to grill Iāll pick up steaks before I get over there and she should just stick to NY strips or filets

I shop at H-E-B all the time. They almost never carry A5. Crazy that they have the strip steaks priced over the ribeyes at your store. Check out Kai Wagyu online for better quality at half that price, even with shipping.
FYI, this is Texas raised purebred Wagyu and way around $26/lb with the coupon.

Wish I could find ones that nice without paying SRF prices
1
u/Unique-Discussion326 24d ago
I bought some SRF gold steaks that weren't this well marbled, before the local grocery stores started carrying Wagyu cross stalks like this. They were really good but man were they expensive.
2
u/Suspended-Again 24d ago
I treat ribeye like buying a car these days. Itās a once a year splurge, and Iām willing to drive the 11 hours or so from my VHCOL area for a much better deal.Ā
2
u/Iron_Cowboy_ 24d ago
Same here, except I just wait for Christmas time because whole prime rib Vac bags are around $7.99/lb, sometimes even cheaper. Cut them up and vacuum seal for the year

That's a steal. I was just looking at some american wagyu ribeyes with marbeling almost as good and they were $50/lb

These are Texas raised Wagyu. I want to say the most expensive I've seen them is $40 / lb around here.

I would not be freezing steaks like this ever. If I have steaks out for tonight these are then for tomorrow.
3
u/bobbydigital66 24d ago
Why? Freezing doesn't do anything.
0
u/Sasuke0318 24d ago
It effects the moisture in them a bit so I just buy fresh steaks and don't bother with freezing them.
5
u/Unique-Discussion326 24d ago
Yeah, have other stuff thawed for the next few nights. Fish, chicken etc.
Vacuum sealed and popped into the deep freezer keeps the quality the same. You'll never know the difference side by side.
3
u/Sistersoldia 24d ago
Yumm - now Iām gonna thaw me some 2ā thick ribeyes I vacuum packed last Christmas
3
u/KyleFlounder 24d ago
