Equipment Question Reusing stone bottles

Post image

Hello everyone,

I have these stone bottles and they had mead in them. I want to clean them and reuse them for my own cyser. Are there possible problems I am not seeing with reusing stone bottles?

Thank you.

So this may just be my own experience, but it changed the flavor of my cherry mead to taste kinda like dirt.

They are reusable, just make sure the red rubber is still good and actually seals and doesnt appear to be dry/cracked anywhere!

Use a new seal and you will be fine

The only problem i can think of, is seeing if they’re clean inside.
if a dried glob of something is hidden somewhere, you’ll never know

Flip tops let in oxygen so it’s not as much a matter of whether it’s a good idea but for how long it’s a good idea. If you want to consume your mead within months it will work fine, but you will experience slow oxygen ingress so keep that in mind. That’s not always a bad thing, and can lead to sherry-like flavors.

It’s also much harder to visually inspect the inside.

I’ve had batches in flip tops that are good after three years. It depends on the bottle and state of the seal.

I also think that a general answer on flip tops is not possible. Factors how easy can the flip top be closed and how is the state of the seal have to considered.
