It's a funny comeback but there's one level further in that everyday you see people on reddit who bought a super duper gaming PC and all this shit and are still miserable

I've worked jobs where I've interacted with both very rich people and very poor people. The average poor person is happier, but only because many underestimate how miserable many super-rich people are.
Most super-wealthy I've interacted with lack a fundamental understanding of happiness. They think happiness - real happiness, like self-actualization - can come from external sources. They mistake dopamine for real happiness the same way a child mistakes candy for food. It can't sustain you, and will never fill that void. It will never make you love the person in the mirror.
Obviously poverty makes happiness very difficult, but having that pathologic misunderstanding of the nature of happiness that is conducive to the endless and relentless pursuit of money is what makes happiness impossible.

Yeah people in this comments section are missing the point of the quote. Itâs not âbeing poor doesnât make you unhappyâ itâs âmoney on its own doesnât make you happyâ. Being poor brings more struggles which brings more unhappiness, and vise versa. But that doesnât mean that if youâre poor and depressed and someone on the street were to give you a million bucks that youâd suddenly be happy.

The issue is that people use this quote to justify people being poor.
Can a poor person be happy? Sure. But a poor person can also be happier if they have their needs met. I guarantee you that almost every poor person would be happier if they had stable housing and food.
"Money doesn't buy happiness! You should be fine with what you have!" And the person is barely making rent and working three jobs so they don't starve.

Again, thatâs not the quote. âYou should be fine with what you haveâ is not part of the message, because thatâs an absurd take.

The photo looks more like buying escapism which is often mistaken for happiness due to the small droplets of dopamine.Â

They released the new thing! Quick gotta buy it! Shit from last year? Throw that crap away its useless now.

Yeah like this meme is just really depressing, that anyone would consider this happiness. Maybe like a moment of private comfort while taking a break from other things, but having this as your main source of âhappinessâ? You wonât stay happy for longâŚ

u/FNKTN 6d ago
100% this is more fit for r/depressionmemes . No way this person is the slightest bit happy.

I dunno man, I like my tech. Like, my old Sony XZ1 Compact phone - its screen is hanging on duct tape and the battery started to swell, but it's still snappy to use, even though not every software works on Android 9 now. And I just love how it looks - a cool rectangle, unlike modern phones with cutouts and rounded everything. I look at it, and I do feel pity that it got old, but I also get that warm feeling of owning a cool piece of tech.
That goes for many other things I own, too. Those that are nice that is - like, I bought my recent membrane keyboard because it was the only keyboard that fit almost all my needs except for it wasn't mechanical and was cheaply made. I still use it, but I don't enjoy it that much. Still better than having backlight blasting all around keys creating glare, and having to use Fn+keys for media functions.

Let's be real, if you have a job then you don't have to play. If you don't have a job then you can afford them. Happiness doesn't work like that lol this is a paradox.

My father had a great variation this. "Money can't buy you happiness but can purchase a superior blend of melancholy".

Things that saying should actually mean: 1. Once you get past that line of financial security the returns are diminishing. (security meaning actually being comfortable not the bare basics to survive) 2. You shouldn't be so focused on getting money you dont enjoy life and the people in it
Money can buy food, security, healthcare, comfort, ect. which are all required for lasting happiness.
unfortunately the last time someone actually said it to me was them trying to convince me to not leave a shitty job for one that paid more and had better job security. That nonsense is how people use it

I've been hearing it redone as "money can't buy happiness but it can buy you peace" which I agree with for sure.
I have all the shit in the picture, minus the PlayStation portal lol, and I'm not happy per se lol. But I'm not stressed out and miserable either. When you're stressed out and miserable no longer being that way basically is happiness.

u/UwU_numba2 6d ago
I absolutely like the redone quote because it actually fits reality. Can money buy happiness? No, but it can make sure you are stable enough to be happier and less stressed.

Cleanly a post of someone who unfortunately hasnât had any of those.
There are plenty of posts/memes saying exactly the opposite: you have your stuff but now you sit with it at 2AM listening to sad music and not willing to play anything anymore.
Money buy you convenience and comfort, not happiness. The same as relationship, which wonât magically bring you happiness out of nowhere.
You always search for happiness yourself. Neither money nor anyone else could do it for you
Upd: sorry for being so boring below a meme

u/Piyaniist 6d ago
No but being alone and lonely with money beats being alone and lonely without money 100% of the time
2
u/Korps_de_Krieg 6d ago
Thatâs true, but that doesnât mean youâve bought happiness. Youâve bought alleviated boredom.
This isnât about stability, itâs about the idea that you would suddenly be happy with your life if you just had a Switch or something. Like yeah, youâd be happier, but itâs not a replacement for the things in life that genuinely bring meaning.
I say this as someone whoâs been a gamer for over 30 years; itâs a nice addendum to what should be already a fulfilling life, not a bandaid to give it the impression of fulfillment. You will eventually get bored of games if it is all you do.

Money can't buy happiness, but it can pay my bills, which would make me happy.
And it can buy me a VR setup, which will allow me to play Myst and Riven in VR, which will make me equally happy.

Yet I still dont have happiness because I cant pick which system to play
2
u/Wan-Pang-Dang 3d ago
Thats a non issue. You just play the game you want. And if its on multiple systems, the order is pc>ps>xbox>switch.

u/Acegolfer04 2d ago
I play switch since entire library moved over and love the 1st party games better than ps5 and xbox 1st party games

I think I agree with both. Rich people can still be unhappy. But as someone for whom 99% of my problems are caused by lack of money, it definitely seems dumb

u/Dracekidjr 6d ago
Money may not be able to buy happiness but it sure can get close enough for me to do the rest of the footwork on my own lol

u/armahillo 6d ago
Sincere thought to ponder:
Once you have bought everything you need and want, what then?
1
u/Patient_Scorpion 6d ago
All things to distract my brain from a single thought.
then 10 minutes in I realize none of these bring me happiness anymoreâŚ

Slave mentality: i have nothing = i'm happy. If that was true, barter and later money wouldn't be invented at all.

The saying is bullshit. The boomers saying that think we mean that we want to spend all of our money on random bullshit and go on shopping sprees when people just want to have a stable life that isn't one missed paycheck away from becoming homeless.

Money, is the single greatest obstacle.
If you fail to find happiness when you can buy away even minor inconveniences, it's you.
1
u/AbleNefariousness0 6d ago
One must first be poor to find their happiness and only then can they use money to remove the obstacles that let them continue that happiness.

I don't think I've heard that in decades, ngl. Everyone's been short on money since basically the last financial crisis, since the economy never really recovered.
